- Any pre '86 Vanagon will have lighter gauge battery cable running back to starter. Easy to retrofit the later, heavier cable (or fab one; marine battery cable is readily available)
- Ditto starter motors. Later 2.1 Bosch starter motors have significantly?more torque than earlier motors
- The Bosch TDI starter is very robust, and needs ample current (at least 2.1L cable or better)
- I have an aftermarket gear reduction starter in my '85 SVX Westy, but it's becoming finicky after 12 years. Probably go with TDI starter next...
- T1 and T2 transporters all had batteries back in the engine compartment. With T3, assume designers hoped to address weight distribution somewhat. Bit academic, particularly with Westfalias, I would guess. Suggest use existing battery cable to take primary power forward if you relocate?battery; voltage drop will be minimized
