Re: Source of EJ22

With all due respect it sounds like the first thing your friend needs to do is get competent mechanic to evaluate the situation and advise him accordingly. It sounds to me like a top end rebuild along with rings may be in order. It also sounds like a correct "break-in" procedure was not followed either by ignorance or negligence along with, or in addition to ignorance or negligence on the part of the rebuilder or resealer mechanic.

He took a measure of risk with a rebuilt motor, more than a new motor, some would say less than a used motor. Personally I do not agree. While many people have great success with rebuilt motors, it would appear far more factory built good used engines perform better, longer.

I would say he got bd advice to begin wit, followed witheven worse advice and now he is asking for still more advice from people that haven,t any idea what his situation is or the condition of the current motor.

Get a competent mechanic.

Hi,
Have you thought about "upgrading" to a latter model 2.5L engine. If
you have a Calif. emission sticker already, you may want to go under
the radar screen and install a more cleaner and powerful engine. I
believe other Calif. 2.2L conversions have done this. It is true that
it is becoming very difficult to find a low mileage, sound 2.2L engine
in Calif. The cost to rebuild (eg. CCR) may in fact be more than the
investment in a low mileage 2.5L, 2000-2006 engine. Any thoughts out
there?
Best regards,

Hi,

My friend's Cali-legal EJ22 (90 to 94)is burning lots of oil and he
thinks he needs a new engine. (Compression is ok, btw.) This is a
Buslab supplied engine that leaked like a sieve when he got it. He
paid my local mechanic almost a grand to reseal the motor and now it
seems to be dying a smokey death.... maybe 25k miles since he had the
conversion done. I think it's a 1990.

I've suggested CCR for a rebuild. I also suggested he contact John
Lemley.

He called somebody about a JDM (he's local to Sacto) and was told
"not available".

Any other good options out there? I've searched craigslist in most
west coast cities, ebay, etc with little good leads.

Thanks,

Tom
