Re: South Bend X - what is it?
From what you've said it sounds to be a similar size to my south bend-ish lathe (a Canadian copy). Took two of us to carry it up out of the guy's basement when I bought it. Around 100lbs I'd guess. Tailstock and Chuck removed but headstock and carriage left in place.
Try looking on lathes.co.uk you'll probably be able to identify it. Spindle nose is 1 1/8" threaded. |
Re: South Bend X - what is it?
I keep selling my South Bend when upgrade to larger new lathe . Then down size so back to buying a good lathe again.?

Re: South Bend X - what is it?
Dave, thanks for the input.? I am 1,000 miles away, so it is not like walking next door to look, but from the short video I made this looks like it might be mounted to the top of an old wooden desk.? I guess that makes this a benchtop design?? Anyone know what the expected weight might be?

South Bend X - what is it?
Hi.? I have a couple of Logan lathes, and it looks like am going to be the next owner of a South Bend.
A year ago I was visiting my uncle and took a quick video of a South Bend lathe that he had in his basement.? He died a week ago and I have been offered this lathe.? I am attaching some snapshots from the video.? The label is blurry, but it looks like it says the swing is 8.? I looked at the video several times and am pretty sure that I see and "8", not a "9".? Since "4 foot" might be the whole bed, what would this lathe be called? ? Can someone educate me on what this is? Also, there will be a day soon when this thing needs to be moved out of the basement.? What is the expected weight once the motor and countershaft assembly (correct name?) are removed, along with the chuck and tailstock?? Do you know if the chuck is threaded onto the spindle? |
16-21 South Bend Lathe
Had an elder Lady stop at my house and asked if I would come to her house and get a lathe that her husband bought 20 years ago sitting in the shop on a trailer with four flat tires he started taking apart and figures out that he could not probably put it back together, like a good neighbor I said yes and followed her to the shop, I was shocked to see this monster and ever attachment for the lathe on pallets, he said the lathe come from a gas compressor company that though a jack leg there could run it only for him to leave the key in the chuck and when he turned it on the key went though those old type big windows, the lathe was disconnected and set in the corner this was suppose to have happen in 1960, found a man that worked there and said it was as stated, I got the birth certificate if was produced it was sold 9/22/1955 to an individual, it is a 16" swing with 5" riser blocks, there is not wear on anything, will post pics of some progress, I would be neat to find some of the decedents of this man and show them it has a new life, this make my 10th. lathe,? I think I will soon have enough, the other South Bend in a 9" 1925

Steady rest needed
Got an old SB heavy 10 in trade and it's missing some parts.? Chip tray (floor gets real messy without one) and a steady rest or follow rest.? Have no idea what one even looks like, but I think it attaches to the slide via two screw holes in the tailstock side of the saddle.? Please, correct me if wrong!? It does have the taper attachment.? Thanks!

Welcome aboard! The first lathe I ran was a South Bend 9C in 1965. ?I was five and had to stand on a bucket in order to reach it. My job was minding the machine as it roughed the OD on longer shafts. When the cut got near the chuck, I disengaged the half nut and killed the power to the motor. After the machine was shut down, I had to get my father to put another shaft in the machine and reset the cross slide for the next operation. Dad still has that old machine, tucked away in the attic of the machineshop it helped create. |
