Re: 9" 1925 South Bend Lathe
Ok, so your motor pulley is flat, (slight ovel) to it and they are 2.100 thousand and 3.400 thousand, Joe? On Sun, 26 Jan, 2025 at 12:05 PM, John Walker via groups.io <johnwa27@...> wrote: ? My measurements

John, yes they are I was talking about the motor pulley being flat and the diameter of the motor pulley, Joe?? On Mon, 27 Jan, 2025 at 9:40 AM, John Walker via groups.io <johnwa27@...> wrote: ? Forgot to mention; both the 2 step and 3 step pulleys on the countershaft pulleys are flat.

Re: 9" 1925 South Bend Lathe
开云体育Are you talking about the belt from the motor to the countershaft or the belt from the countershaft to the spindle? If the countershaft assembly is mounted to the bench separately
from the lathe, then the flat belt size would depend on where the
countershaft is mounted. I'm guessing here since I haven't seen a 1925 9", but based on many of the countershaft assemblies that SB used, the motor mounts directly to the countershaft? In that case the v-belt length will be fixed. If you have pulleys with two grooves on the motor and two flats on the countershaft, I believe the v-belt should work in both locations without changing the length or using a tensioner. The image in my head is based off of my 10K with horizontal drive. In any case, if you get a seamstress tape measure (tailor's tape)
you can directly measure the flat belt size from the countershaft
to the spindle. For the v-belt from the motor to the countershaft, I would suggest using a piece of 1/2" diameter rope wrapped around the pulleys, mark the rope then lay it out flat for a measurement. OR. if you have an old belt from something else that is longer, cut the belt and then wrap it around the pulleys, mark and measure. I am pretty confident that the v-belt will be an "A" series which means that it is 1/2" wide on the top of the belt. It should fit entirely into the groove of the motor pulley. Ideally it does not stick up above the groove nor should it bottom out in the bottom of the Vee. This assures that the belt sides make complete contact with the pulley. The motors were most likely only 1/4 to 1/2 HP on those early lathes, but I have no direct knowledge of that. The oldest documentation I have is a catalog from 1966. There
were lots of different motor options in that catalog. Have you looked on the vintagemachinery.org web site? If you would like, I can take some screen shots of that catalog and email them directly to you, in case that might help. Would that be an "O" series lathe in 1925? 开云体育Yer lookin for the pulley size for the " flat pulley on the counter shaft " or the 2 slot pulley on the motor ? I thought the 2 slot motor pulley was in the files section . animal On 1/25/25 9:22 AM, Joe Guidry via

Re: SB9 Belt Adjuster/Tensioner
Thank you, Mike Allen,? appreciate the download and the time to reply.
?
I signed up to the site you mentioned and looked around, thank's, lots there.
?
I found this on another site. It has the measurements I was looking for. Basically, the measurement? D, shafts center to center, in my case says 16 1/2" which puts my belt at 44 1/2" and that makes sense with what I've found. I don't understand why the other shown attachments would make a difference in that measurement.
This shows my E? at 10 11/16" whereas others like the one you sent me are all at about 15 3/4".
?
I found a belt on Amazon 2" shorter and about $15 cheaper. When I get it on I'll see if I can mount the E measurement shown at 10 11/16" so when I do find the proper adjuster and rods? I'll buy a new belt. It will get working anyway.
Ya, thanks for the advice on the felts, I have read on that and will see what kinda shape their in. Kinda steep for the kit I've seen but ya get the book.
I'ill be taking it apart a couple of times for sure and taking some pictures.

Re: SB9 Belt Adjuster/Tensioner
开云体育??? ??? The belt length is pretty dependent on the placement on
the counter shaft . Page 5 of the attached manual shows dimensions
of where South Bend decided the countershaft should be from the
lathe . Keep in mind that the larger pulley will over hang the
back of most benches . I know that I need to move rthe counter
shaft on my 9A closer to the lathe so I can push my bench against
the wall . Ya also may want to do some digging around at this site
, a couple thousand hrs of experience with these lathes over there
, it's free to sign up . Have ya pulled the spindle to se what kind of shape the wicks are
in ? If not ya may want to do that , easy to do & can save a
spindle . good luck . animal On 11/13/24 9:29 PM, Boltspinner via

SB9 Belt Adjuster/Tensioner
Hello all, new here so I'm hoping this is getting sent to the right place.
?
I just picked up a 1947 C9-10JR.Most of it is there and looks pretty decent, after a quick clean it seems like everything will polish up nicely.
My problem is I'm missing the rods and adjuster nut for the belt tensioner. I'll have to make something up but I need a belt and would like to know the length of the adjuster, pin to pin.
?
I know I can make it whatever to fit whatever belt I get but would like to get the original pieces one day and not have to change the belt again if my guess is off.
I have seen the parts picture online for sale and could try to figure out the length from that, they don't seem to deliver to Canada.
If anyone knows the length or could tell me where else I could look it would be greatly appreciated. ![]()

S B 9 UMD inside door label
Still restoring my UMD 9 inch which I am converting to a 10K. The back side of the door that accesses the belt change area has an instruction label. If anyone has one that the label is decent would you please email a photo of it to me. I know a long shot as most are probably ruined. I replaced the drawer guides with Accuride ball bearing slides. Not easy but worked out well. If anyone would like a photo of this let me know. Cabinet close to being sprayed gray. I use Axalta Nason two part automotive paint. leaves a nice durable finish.? Much appreciate. Click my name and the email will show up.? |
