ACME threads

Fred Flintstone

Hello all,

I hope everyone had a great holiday,

I have an old vise I am trying to restore, it is a small vise, and it is missing a t type nut internally and I have to tap a new one. I have not cut an ACME thread since high school over 50 years ago. This thread is 6 per inch and the diameter is 1/2 inch. I am at a total loss as to what to do and from what I have seen 6 TPI is not standard either.

I need all the help I can get on this.

Thank you,
Stoeger

First, right or left hand thread?

These may help. BUT are you shure it’s 1/2? If it’s true Acme and 1/2-6 there is little room for a tool in the nut ID.?

Here is a 1/2-10 I made.?

Thank you,

Yes I am sure it is 1/2 inch and have access to a 1/2 inch 10 tap, which of course does me no good.

That sounds like the right answer to me, as well. And you can buy 10tpi Acme thread inserts pre-ground. Though I haven't found one of the holders small enough for my Atlas lathe, and I don't have the South Bend Heavy 10L running yet.?

Do you have any kind of Acme threading tool ?
Are you contemplating grinding one?
Does your lathe handle 6TPI?

I checked my old ones. The Single tumbler Heavy 10 will. The 9” C can.?
I can’t find data on the Double Tumbler GB.?

Both my SB 9A double tumbler and SB 13" will cut 6 tpi.

When taking pics like this, don't use the flash on your camera. It works better with the room lights on.

An advantage of going to 10 threads per inch is increased force on the jaws with each turn of the handle.

not to mention each rotation is 0.10 tool movement

Hello all,

Thanks to everyone for the replies I changed it to 10 in the end.

I am sure I will more questions soon as I am going to thoroughly clean the lathe, and will want to know how to adjust it.

Take care,
Stoeger

If you don't have the Ilion rebuild manual I highly recommend it . Ya can buy it with or without wicks . Depending on the condition of yer lathe you may want/need the wicks kit . The book is a real good one to have , I think I probably would have put my QCGB back together 7-8 times if it wasn't for the manual .
