141/2" 1940s Southbend lathe

Martyn 2E0MHL

Hi,
Just joined the group.
Martyn is the name .
We have an old Southbend lathe, 14 1/2" swing 7ft bed, I believe to be 1940s, with quick change gearbox.
This is in our workshop used for all manor of things related to the motor trade. We build engines, race prep etc.
We are in the UK by the way.
We are in need of a new flat belt for the south bend 1 3/8" wide and 69-70" long.
Where would we get one of these and the joiner for it? Ours is currently joined with cable ties....yes I know...not the best way, but it works.
Is there anywhere in the Uk that supplies these or would it be just US?
Any help from UK or US Southbend users would be appreciated.
Martyn

Hi Martyn,
You could use a strip from a supermarket convayerband at the rigisters.
Check out Winky on Youtube how to glue them.
I used formic acid and two pieces of wood with a clamp for 24 hours.
Regrets from the Netherlands of an Heavy 10 owner,
Ruud

Hi Martyn,

Got a 6' tool room one of those at the Golden Valley Light Railway, Derbyshire. Take a look at these on ebay (and at our website while you're at it, as the lathe is illustrated & described there).

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371882773843

&

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373055900566

The same supplier does other sizes of belting.

Hi Martyn, This ebay is the same as Stationary engine parts. I use these belts. They are a bit tricky to get right when you assemble the clamps and pin them down. Or I may not have the trick. You need to be very precise when cutting the belt square and then getting the pins to bite the belt in the right place. They will make a noise each time they go round the pulley. But I like their quality, I just have to buy extra to allow for my mistakes in fitting them.

I went to a commercial belt company that does conveyor belts & they made me a belt made of some type of reinforced rubber . The belt along with them doing the alligator clips cost me 10 bucks .? Don't know where you are located . I used California Industrial Rubber , but any belting co can get ya going . Originally? I went to Tandy Leather & bought a belt blank for making a belt to hold yer britches up . Then I went to the conveyor belt to have them lace it up & thats when the guy offered to make me the composition belt . The clicking of the alligator belts does not bother me at all .

Look around in the industrial neighbor hood in yer area , there's bound to ba a belting co in there somewhere . If ya have access to a Thomas Register there should be someone nearby in one of their big green books .

I still find grabbing a Gates serpentine belt from a local auto store to be the best. They are at least as good if not better than every other belt I have ever used. The downside is you have to pull the spindle, but that’s a really simple job that does not require re-alignment, etc. I think too many people are scared away from this.

If the alligator clips are making noise, you (or whoever install them didn't do it right. I've done a few for my former employer, and bought from another supplier here in the USA, so my sources won't be much help to you. The clips should sink into the leather or composite belting a bit. We did it with a vise and the specialty tool for that purpose. You can bevel, glue, and lace them your self, also. You can also buy them for small money, if you don't really have the time or skill to DIY. If I can ever get my Heavy 10L together, I'll buy the belt unless WWIII has already gone hot!

Got to much going on to worry too much about it. Wife has been in the hospital since last Friday, partial blockage of the small intestine. Hasn't had anything to eat since either lunch last Wednesday, or possibly breakfast that Thursday. And she's PO'd at me enough that I may be getting a divorce, or at least a separation. World has gone just a little bit crazy, and that's without looking out at the rest of the world. :(? ?She said something about a possible tumor, but that doesn't happen is just a few days. They've been keeping her pretty doped up, so may be her imagination, maybe not. Last I talked to the doc he hadn't been able to look at the x-ray and CT scan reports or images. That was day before yesterday. I'm having vertigo problems today, myself, so sitting at the computer after eating and drinking something. Been missing a lot of sleep the past few days, too. Likewise meals and such. She got cleared for clear liquids today, and that is about all I know at this point in time.?

Animal,

the doctors are not allowed to dispense medical advice via email. They can lose their license. It is a pain in the butt to go to the office to speak with them, but many now allow virtual visits, and you can have a zoom meeting with the doctor to discuss your concerns.?

Hi Martyn,
If you decide to use an endless belt and need to remove the spindle, read the forum for instructions on how to remove and reinstall the main bearing covers. That is important if there are slide bearings in it!

Hi Martyn,
You could use a strip from a supermarket convayerband at the rigisters.
Check out Winky on Youtube how to glue them.
I used formic acid and two pieces of wood with a clamp for 24 hours.
