Re: top oiler wick/felt
Yes the original caps are press fit, one is missing. I was thinking about making the new ones also press fit.. but that is for another day.
Thanks,

Re: threading
Hi Wayne
Remember this is a hobby and colleting tools and building the ultimate hobby shop is in itself a hobby. I have been 50 years colleting tools for my hobby shop and though I have way more

Re: top oiler wick/felt
Doug these are exactly what I was talking about. These have been a standard in the industry for over a 100 years that I know of probably a lot longer than that.

Re: top oiler wick/felt
Hi Doug
All the 9 inch wide bed head stocks I have (maybe 15 of them) have no felts in the bearings. These are total lost lube bearings. You poor it in and it runs out. There were no provisions

Re: top oiler wick/felt
I did a Google and this came up. There are others.
http://www.newmantools.com/tapdie.htm
Also note that there is a BSP and a BSPT. The BSP is straight the BSPT is
tapered.
The oiler is a 1/8

Re: threading
I have been doing this now for the last 5 years with both inch and metric threads. Faster, easier and way less stress! The only sensible way to cut threads.

Re: top oiler wick/felt
Not so much the wrong year as the wrong lathe. Doug has a wide bed with bronze
inserts.
If I remember what Dennis said there is not grove in the inserts, like the one
in your Workshop.

Re: threading
The other way, and this works for any TPI, is to NEVER disengage the half nuts.
When you get to the end of the threads and you tool just enters the thread
relief, shut the lathe off.
Back the tool

Re: threading
Wayne,
Yes you can thread with out a threading dial. Several ways to do it. One way: (this is a short version need to read How to Run a Lathe)
1. be sure you have the correct gears in place.
2.

Re: top oiler wick/felt
I think that there are no felts per se in lathes of this era.
The top oiler Workshops had a groove for the insertion of a felt, but I think,
and I can be wrong here and if so I think Dennis will

Re: threading
If your leadscrew is 8 TPI then you can engage the halfnuts at will and an 8 TPI thread will repeat. One thing to note though is that it is possible to get the halfnuts to grab the leadscrew

Re: top oiler wick/felt
Doug,
Welcome to the group
Yes the the felts are supposed to run along the groove to act as a wick.
Jim B has a picture of what they look like, I cannot find it right now but I am sure he will

threading
I need to thread a piece 1" by 8tpi and about 1" long. I don't have a thread counter yet on my 9" lathe. Do I need one, or is there some trick to threading without one I need to know before I

top oiler wick/felt
I have a 9 in wide bed lathe. built in 1929 The oil in the top bronze bearings leak outs as fast as I put it in. I pulled the top bearings off and all I found was a round felt wick in the oil cup.
