Re: OT, old vises ID
Just because something is collectible, does not preclude me from using it. I restore antique motorbikes from the 1930¡¯s-50¡¯s, that doesn¡¯t mean I don¡¯t ride them. > > >

I have had a love affair with old Mustangs since I had one in college.? I saw an ad in the paper years ago where a guy on the east side of Detroit had two 66 convertibles.? I called and went over to

Re: A very different T-Nut.
Pretty cool repair. Sometimes doing just one project like this completely justifies the having of a tool such as a lathe.

A very different T-Nut.
I dug up this old project up. I had to modify it to include the pictures. Originally they were on photo bucket. I thought it might be of interest. Hope it comes through. Jim B. Dr. James A

Re: OT, old vises ID
It doesn¡¯t matter where something is made as far as quality goes. What matters is the reputation of the company whose name is on it. Old devices may be very good quality - or they may not. Really

??? ??? It could have a # on the other side . Looks to me that this vise does not have replaceable jaws . You really have to give a vise like this a couple of one overs looking for hairline

Re: OT, old vises ID
If I use it, it is not collectable. If I stick it in a glass cabinet to gawk at, it is collectable. People have some severely misguided ideas about what is and what is not collectable in this world.

Everything was normal stuff until it became collectible!

In one way, I'm a collector of tool. I collect them to use. Though on any given day, I may be out in the shop stroking one or more of my tools lasciviously. ;)? This past couple of weeks I've been

I started this thread instead of replying to the Tee nut thread. It is a bit off topic for making Tee nuts :-) Bill, I changed the tumblers on my RV trailer so everything opens with the same key. This

Re: OT, old vises ID
Looking at the picture, the vise appears to be in good shape, but you need to inspect it. Rock Island vises are good vises. The thing that bothers me with the one shown is it only has the name cast on

Buying a used vice is like buying a used car.? If you do not inspect it and try it out it is impossible to determine value.? An eighty year old heavy vise which has had little use and been kept

I believe it's called "thread drift." Might as well get used to it, as it seems to happen everywhere! And second, very nice job. I had to hunt down your post again, as I hadn't seen the photos yet
