Maybe in a production environment this saved some time, in a home shop situation, people do it purely for the sake of doing it.

The tee nut is deliberately left large so it can be fitted to your lathe. It is a metric thread on the P-2. I believe it is a M14 but not positive. I can measure mine if you want. It isn’t too hard

I believe this is to convert the fwd/rev lead screw gears, so you do not require a wrench to loosen the locking bolt. “newer” SB lathes use a spring plunger like those on the quick-change gear
