ot: creating a playlist as a gift?

Hi techno wonders.
Have a heart brother turning 40, and they are only *cough* partakers of
non-standard music media.
No cd player, or turntable, only playlists.
They use Android.
My question is this.
Anyone know of a way to generate a music playlist, happy to buy the files,
that does not involve either YouTube, or spotify, and can be shared with an
android user?
Surely some open source method exists?
Thanks,
Kare

Hi.

There are three methods I would look at. Firstly you could copy the files to their phone and create a playlist in some piece of software like phonograph, there is a list of local music apps here:?
Another option would be to host either an Emby (open source), Plex (low cost closed source) or Roon (high cost/quality closed source) media server and then set up albums and playlists there.

In any of these cases, you need to download the files in some format probably either non-DRM MP3/AAC or FLAC, or purchase CDs and then rip them in order to put together the playlist.

Personally, I use Plex for my music, as even though it is non-free I am able to control the files, and the interface is better than Emby IMHO. I hear really good things about Roon, I just can't justify the cost.
