New Fanfic Downloader Beta

开云体育

Hi all,
The new beta is out!!! Yay!!! So happy it's being worked on!!
I tried it and it worked! Epub did not work though for me I'll be curious if others can. HTML and PDF loaded well. And for those who like double spaces between paragraphs and quotes, you can load the html version, then insert space, select all, copy, then paste in wherever you read.
Katy

Unfortunately, nothing yet for macOS.

Where can I get the beta? I went f frown loaded site and what they have posted is the same one I alter have.

It is available here: I would, however, wait a couple of days as it has a minor problem with some fics that prevent conversion that Rai is working on. The html file is always great, though. If you do try beta2, be sure to update Rai with your experiences with it.

WIn 11, right? Ignore it. That just means that it's not in Mickeysoft's database. Oh, and read the instructions on the page you downloaded it from. The file is a stand-alone executable, not an installer. Create a folder named "ffdl" somewhere on your system and extract the zip file to that folder. Run the file "ffdl-beta-2.0.0-beta2.exe" from that folder. Make certain that you have a recent version of Calibre installed first. If Windows gives any kind of security warning, tell it to "Allow" or "Ignore" or whatever it wants. It is completely safe. I have personally tested it on Win 7, 10, and 11 and other than some trouble with FFN's summary formatting that's occasionally confusing Calibre (which Rai is addressing), it works great.

Why do we need this garbage program to run or use ffdl? Never had to beforw and ffsl still works for some sites. Just not or ficwad from what i see.
Also qhy html? Not a txt or rtf format?

We have this, because the maker has worked hard to make it despite the pitfalls of cloudflare. Also he has been working on one incarnation of this or another for many years.
It may not work like it used to, but it's possible he'll get it there, but at least we have one still being worked on.
If you're having problems, put them in the contact form on the beta site constructively and if there is a fix, then cool. I get frustrated as well, but not at the program. It starts with fanfiction.net.

Calibre is more of a front end application for organising your library, connecting to readers and other such functions.

When you add 'books' to calibre, it copies them into a directory system it controls based on the authors name.

While you can't add directories or folders as such, there is a method to create 'Virtual Libraries' which contain listings of whatever the specification may be.
?For example, I have several Virtual libraries which cover various fandoms Like BtVS, HP, Naruto & Stargate.
These virtual libraries only show books from the related fandom based on the additional metadata I add.

That metadata can be shown as custom columns (I have Fandom, Chapters, Status [In Progress, Complete and so on], Genre and Series which I have added). The Virtual Libraries show fics based on the Fandom.

While the files are kept in the Calibre directories, when you want to read one, you double click on the book name and it will open the book with the appropriate external program according to the type of format the file has. Calibre does supply an out of the box E-book viewer, but depending on what your file settings are, it may use something different.
My install uses Adobe Reader for PDF, Firefox for HTML & the E-book Viewer for any epubs.

When you have a file highlighted, you should have a sidebar on the right showing a copy of the cover along with the basic information about the file. If you right click on the file format, you can select what program to use to open that particular file type.

Calibre has a ton of features and is regularly updated every couple of weeks.

You don't have to even use it, just have it installed and kept up to date to allow the fanficdownloader to convert the files to the format you want. This used to happen automatically in the background with the old program and hopefully will with the new one when it's closer to being a finished.

I have to say that I find Calibre to be almost unusable.

It doesn't give you the option of adding a "book" to the library when you open one,
it just does it. There is bludger-all opportunity to organise your "library" - it is just one
linear list. Removing a text you don't want to keep is a pain and there are few options
concerning formatting and pagination.

The program seems to demand an inordinate amount of resources on my computer and
takes forever and a week to load its clunky interface.

I still haven't figured out how to bookmark pages, and the lack of ability to add margin
notes is a total deal-breaker.

As far as I can see, it only has one advantage, and that is the ability to re-flow pages to fit
the application window (useful for having a reference open while working on a paper).

As for fan fictions - I don't bother if the only format is eBook - I would rather read a text file.

I install Calibre but it looks like 10 tons of useless. Cant add directories or folders to library, only files and doesnt seem to really load files to be read, just keeps opening new windows asking to load the files,
Why do we need this garbage program to run or use ffdl? Never had to beforw and ffsl still works for some sites. Just not or ficwad from what i see.
Also qhy html? Not a txt or rtf format?

Run the file "ffdl-beta-2.0.0-beta2.exe" from that folder. Make certain that you have a recent version of Calibre installed first. If Windows gives any kind of security warning, tell it to "Allow" or "Ignore" or whatever it wants. It is completely safe. I have personally tested it on Win 7, 10, and 11 and other than some trouble with FFN's summary formatting that's occasionally confusing Calibre (which Rai is addressing), it works great.

Hi all,
The new beta is out!!!

Caliber offers me nothing and as others complain are mentioned just makes everything more complicated than it has to be I am very grateful that someone is trying to help us download from which I have been doing for over 26 years
My concern is that we now have to add a second program that is resource heavy and not very user friendly in order to use one of the better programs with ffdl.
I'm old enough to have been doing this long enough that I was transferring files on floppy disks which had a 1.44 MB size limit
With some of the modern formats this isn't even enough space to fit one chapter of some stories. Ebook ePub HTML all increase the size of the files do the formatting processes to ridiculous amounts. Appointment text file might be one megabyte for a 500,000 word story where that same story as an ebook is 60 or 70 MB at a bare minimum. I'm still old school and that I worry about serving space and ease of reading and transferability. Currently in possession of over 1 GB worth of story files which amount to roughly 75,000 files.
Everything from Individual chapters have completed stories completed full length and cyclopedia length in stories and novels and everything in between. Mostly in txt, .doc, or .rtf formats watch me read pretty much any device any operating system as long as it has a basic text reading program such as notepad or wordpad
HTML documents require a browser or an internet connection to be read and when you want to read in an area where you don't have internet access you can't really do it. Also different versions of browsers sometimes alter the formatting or viewability of an HTML document. Some of my older documents that are HTML can no longer be viewed with the modern browsers do the changes in programming in the last 25 years.
Before my preference and being able to download simple text and settle fancy overcomplicated processes such as ebook Pub and HTML.

If Rai completes it as he did with the previous versions, there should be an installer that includes the files necessary for conversion from the portable version of Calibre, thereby negating the need for the full Calibre to be installed. As this is still an early beta, there was no point in going through that extra effort until he got the downloader portion working.

I understand what you're saying about experience and saving space being a habit. I remember single-sided 5.25" and 8" floppies and loading programs from tape. There are members of this group that remember even further back.

What I don't understand is where you got the idea that epubs are unnecessarily large. Just for S&G, I grabbed RobSt's "Harry Crow" at 737k words. The html is 4093KB, the pdf is 4835KB, and the epub is 1680KB. The epub format was created for the purpose of small file sizes on portable devices. Now, it does require a specialized viewer, but other than that, it is superior in saving space and adjusting to your environment.

I'm not trying to be an a**hole about this, but I'm just trying to prevent any confusion among those with, shall we say, less computer experience.
