Email me off the list if your computer can take Windows 10. I have a spare Win 10 Pro Key.

Hi,
I'm getting multiple emails about the 64 bit problem so I'll
build a 32 bit version as soon as possible - as long as my
buildserver will do as i tell him. (Didn't expect that to still be
a problem)
I expect that it'll definitifely run on win 7/8.1
But I have no idea about XP. If it's not running there then
there's nothing I can do about it since I can only support
plattforms that the framework supports. And according to their
website thats Win 7, 8.1 and 10, macOS 10.13, 10.14 10.15. It's
really not a matter of "I don't want to" but only "I simply can't
do it technically"
But if 0.9.1 (which still was 32 Bit) wasn't able to run on XP
then that will be likely also be true for 0.9.2 and following.

I'd strongly recommend against running a 32bit OS at this point in time; almost all modern applications are deployed with 64-bit binaries only.
Understand that the transition to 64-bit was made back during the Server 2003 days; the world's been on 64-bit for more than fifteen years now, and trying to run a 32bit OS will cause you to struggle?to find applications that work.
I'd also strongly recommend against running any desktop version of Windows that is NOT Windows 10 - Windows 7 sunset in January 2020 (it was extended several years from the original EOL) and Windows 8.1 reached end of life in 2018.? Updates for them stopped being written back then, so patches against new vulnerabilities and to solve problems have permanently ceased, nor will Microsoft do more than 'best effort' tech support if you have a problem of some kind.
Windows 10 is fast, stable, and reliable.? It has been so for a number of years now, and there's no reason not to move forward with it.? I have a key for it if you need one.

Please stop mentioning Windows 10. I have already explained that I am stuck with what I have for the foreseeable future. My computer is an old Win 98 upgraded to XP. It barely runs XP. It cannot handle anything higher.
I am broke(have no money), crippled, and living in a nursing home. All my "good stuff" was stolen when my house was broken into while I was away. This old computer can barely handle Win XP now. Especially with half of it's capacitors blown. I cannot "upgrade".
And going to anything above XP would mean I could no longer play my old games, use my old programs, or other such stuff that actually needs XP.
Besides... I hate Windows 10. I tried it once on a friend's laptop, and it really sucked balls. I'll stick with XP instead. It is more user friendly.
So everyone who mentioned Win 10, stop. I'm not interested. And Rai, if you can't make a new FFDownloader that is XP compatible... how about adjusting 0.8.13 so that it can download again?
|
I agree, but there may be hardware
issues.? If they're running XP, it's likely the hardware dates
back that far.

A general response here .....
An awful lot of us have older kit that will not run Windows 10.
A heck of a lot of us detest Windows 10 with a vengeance.
One hell of a lot of us have no intention of wasting money replacing a perfectly serviceable computer? in order to get the same performance out of an OS we don't want.
Most of us are broke, and have more important things to spend our money
on - food, heat, shelter, for example.
Please, do not assume that we are Luddites?, Ignorant Peasants? or unaware of the inevitable march of progress who need Techno Evangelists? to bring us into the light. We have already Seen The Light? and found it wanting.

Windoesn't/Orifice as a monthly subscription thing.
S*d that for a game of soldiers.
Looks like my next upgrade is to Debian and WINE.
It also looks like I need to get on with migrating my collection DB to something that runs either under WINE or native on Linux.
The real problem is the Activation Model used by Win 7. If someone could kill that so the OS could be migrated to a different system, then I'd pay money for that hax (maybe).

Preach it sister!^_^
Preach it, yeah!^_^
Windows 10 is garbage, and XP was the last good OS that Microsoft ever made!^_^
|
The Windows 7 Activation system was worked around a long time ago, about as long as Windows 7 itself has been around. And the various tools involved are free, fairly simple, and do not modify Windows itself.
Still, not something to be discussed any further on list.

THAT'S going to go over like a wet fart, and

I don't think the governments of the world will let them get away with that.
If they try to do it, I can see a lot of governments either suing or banning them from import.

XP is great, but I prefer 7. Mind you, I only just managed to get a hold of an XP-64 install for one of my XP machines. Now it hums along, and handles the extra RAM.
Having said that, I have seen XP with some of the useful bits of 7 grafted in.
