As to aliens .... well, that's just racial bias, innit.

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
Hey folks,?
Now that FF.net is back up, if you implemented the HOSTS file fix, I recommend that you go and either remove the entry that you added or you comment it out (for Windows, at a # symbol to the front of the line).
That's because your computer will always use the HOSTS entry while it's there and not try to look up the address, and those addresses can change.? So if you leave the HOSTS entry in place, and FF.net changes IPs for any reason, you'll be broken and no one else will.? And by then, you'll have forgotten that you have that entry present!

The things involving hosts files can only be used for hacking if the set of numbers (the IP address) you are manually adding to the hosts file lead to something other than fanfiction.net. In which case it's the source of those numbers that is at fault (or a man-in-the-middle on the mailing list). The hosts file method predates the DNS system, and is designed to override DNS. Technically it doesn't override it, when you enter in something www.fanfiction.net, the system first checks the hosts file, and if it isn't present in the hosts file, it queries the DNS server for an IP address. So if anything, you are less likely to be hacked using something in the hosts file than in DNS, since they would have to modify the hosts file on your computer instead of compromising the DNS server and how it is updated. There is a reason you need administrative access to modify the hosts file, that is to protect you from malware modifying your hosts file to redirect you from one website to a fake one to collect say your passwords for Google, microsoft, amazon, ebay, your bank, etc.

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
DNS is the internet's weak point.
There's a common haiku about it in Sysadmin spaces.
The method used isn't a "hack" or unintended bypass - it's always worked that way - the hosts file was how to resolved IP addresses into human readable form before public DNS was widespread.
When the real DNS is functional again - you simply remove the address.
You won't look like a threat because the other end has no idea how you resolved the address - it can't tell. The worst you have is the risk of hitting a phishing website if you leave it in place and someone else gets access to the address.

Not really.
DNS stands for Domain Name Server and all it does is provide the
IP number to the requesting computer.
An IP number is basically the same as a?street address. It just
tells everyone WHERE they are located.
The DNS is just a giant hosts file all by itself and all the
different DNS systems cross reference and update from each other
all the time.
That just means that an address being removed from one machine
will slowly propagate through all the DNS systems.
This shows up as sites coming up and going down at different
times according to when the different DNS systems update.
This was illustrated with the latest problem with FFN with some
people losing it quickly while other people still had it showing
up for close to a day before they lost it.
The website IP address is assigned by whichever Hosting Service
is providing the space for the website and is added to their
local DNS system...
If the host decides they no longer want to host the website or
the client shuts the site down, they remove the site's IP
address from their local DNS system.
Setting the IP number in the Hosts file just bypasses the entire
DNS system and sets the IP address for the specified website
locally. In this case the IP address is to cloudflare's FFN
access address which then bypasses the DNS server as well.

hmm.
Perhaps it is me, but does not all this feel like you are
opening the door
for? hacking at their end again?
FFN reports dns address issues..which in and of itself is
concerning.
All of these surprise dns options exist that bypass what
should not be
easily bypassed.
It just feels odd.
For me personally main site has been running cloudflare
stories for a few
years now, but still.
What happens once the real dns door is restored?
will not you look like a possible threat using this
alternative?
Just wondering of course.

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
Not really.
DNS stands for Domain Name Server and all it does is provide the IP number to the requesting computer.
An IP number is basically the same as a?street address. It just tells everyone WHERE they are located.
The DNS is just a giant hosts file all by itself and all the different DNS systems cross reference and update from each other all the time.
That just means that an address being removed from one machine will slowly propagate through all the DNS systems.
This shows up as sites coming up and going down at different times according to when the different DNS systems update.
This was illustrated with the latest problem with FFN with some people losing it quickly while other people still had it showing up for close to a day before they lost it.
The website IP address is assigned by whichever Hosting Service is providing the space for the website and is added to their local DNS system...
If the host decides they no longer want to host the website or the client shuts the site down, they remove the site's IP address from their local DNS system.
Setting the IP number in the Hosts file just bypasses the entire DNS system and sets the IP address for the specified website locally. In this case the IP address is to cloudflare's FFN access address which then bypasses the DNS server as well.

How do you go about adding an entry to host files? Is that something a person should do if they know nothing (I drink and yet I know nothing)? Thanks.
