This isn't the first time this rumor has popped up and I doubt it will be the last. I've been a registered user for 17 years (and reading on it for 19) and I've lost count of the number of times it was being sold or shut down or whatever else someone pulled out of their, erm, butt. All that Cloudflare protection isn't cheap, so I suspect it will around for a long while.

- No update right now, but a quick note: This site appears to be on its last legs, from what I can make out. There are quite a few parts of it that aren't working now, such as story statistics and notifications of PMs. I suspect that these may well not be fixed in a timely manner, or possibly at all, since it appears that the site owners have largely abandoned the site.

Clearly this is annoying on a number of levels, but it can't be helped. I just wanted to say that I'll continue to update my stories here for as long as possible, but if this place finally falls over completely and irretrievably, I also post on AO3, as well as Sufficient Velocity and (with the exception of Taylor Varga), on Spacebattles. So should this come about, look there for my work :)

I would advise that anyone who has favorite stories here, especially ones that are nowhere else and not likely to be duplicated elsewhere for any reason, to download and save them just in case. There are tools on the web to allow this to be done reasonably easily. I would recommend fichub dot net as it seems to work well.

Anyway, that was all I wanted to say right now. I'll be back with more words in the near future...

I really doubt that FFN is going away -- they must have far too much ad revenue based on what I saw while I was testing ffdl. I was using it in clean virtual machines, so I didn't have any ad blockers. I was shocked at the number and size of the ads on the pages. They must make it exceptionally hard to read anything.

FFn and it's counterpart FictionPress just got moved to a massive new server. They've been working bugs out of the system for awhile. Parts of the sites have been popping off and on as they do. Unfortunately, one of the parts that went static was their update status on the front page of the FFn (which is fixed now).

I'll tell you what I've told other groups, is they updated the official app before all this happened. They've got it fully functional, no down time issues. Still can upload, read, and moderate.

They currently have email setup to contact the dev team for site issues during the server transfer, or you can always hit up the app people.

Re: New Fanfic Downloader Beta

If Rai completes it as he did with the previous versions, there should be an installer that includes the files necessary for conversion from the portable version of Calibre, thereby negating the need for the full Calibre to be installed. As this is still an early beta, there was no point in going through that extra effort until he got the downloader portion working.

I understand what you're saying about experience and saving space being a habit. I remember single-sided 5.25" and 8" floppies and loading programs from tape. There are members of this group that remember even further back.

What I don't understand is where you got the idea that epubs are unnecessarily large. Just for S&G, I grabbed RobSt's "Harry Crow" at 737k words. The html is 4093KB, the pdf is 4835KB, and the epub is 1680KB. The epub format was created for the purpose of small file sizes on portable devices. Now, it does require a specialized viewer, but other than that, it is superior in saving space and adjusting to your environment.

I'm not trying to be an a**hole about this, but I'm just trying to prevent any confusion among those with, shall we say, less computer experience.

These virtual libraries only show books from the related fandom based on the additional metadata I add.

That metadata can be shown as custom columns (I have Fandom, Chapters, Status [In Progress, Complete and so on], Genre and Series which I have added). The Virtual Libraries show fics based on the Fandom.

While the files are kept in the Calibre directories, when you want to read one, you double click on the book name and it will open the book with the appropriate external program according to the type of format the file has. Calibre does supply an out of the box E-book viewer, but depending on what your file settings are, it may use something different.
My install uses Adobe Reader for PDF, Firefox for HTML & the E-book Viewer for any epubs.

When you have a file highlighted, you should have a sidebar on the right showing a copy of the cover along with the basic information about the file. If you right click on the file format, you can select what program to use to open that particular file type.

Calibre has a ton of features and is regularly updated every couple of weeks.

You don't have to even use it, just have it installed and kept up to date to allow the fanficdownloader to convert the files to the format you want. This used to happen automatically in the background with the old program and hopefully will with the new one when it's closer to being a finished.

Re: New Fanfic Downloader Beta

I have to say that I find Calibre to be almost unusable.

It doesn't give you the option of adding a "book" to the library when you open one,
it just does it. There is bludger-all opportunity to organise your "library" - it is just one
linear list. Removing a text you don't want to keep is a pain and there are few options
concerning formatting and pagination.

The program seems to demand an inordinate amount of resources on my computer and
takes forever and a week to load its clunky interface.

I still haven't figured out how to bookmark pages, and the lack of ability to add margin
notes is a total deal-breaker.

As far as I can see, it only has one advantage, and that is the ability to re-flow pages to fit
the application window (useful for having a reference open while working on a paper).

As for fan fictions - I don't bother if the only format is eBook - I would rather read a text file.

I tried it and it worked! Epub did not work though for me I'll be curious if others can. HTML and PDF loaded well. And for those who like double spaces between paragraphs and quotes, you can load the html version, then insert space, select all, copy, then paste in wherever you read.

Calibre is more of a front end application for organising your library, connecting to readers and other such functions.

When you add 'books' to calibre, it copies them into a directory system it controls based on the authors name.

While you can't add directories or folders as such, there is a method to create 'Virtual Libraries' which contain listings of whatever the specification may be.
?For example, I have several Virtual libraries which cover various fandoms Like BtVS, HP, Naruto & Stargate.

Why do we need this garbage program to run or use ffdl? Never had to beforw and ffsl still works for some sites. Just not or ficwad from what i see.
Also qhy html? Not a txt or rtf format?

I have personally tested it on Win 7, 10, and 11 and other than some trouble with FFN's summary formatting that's occasionally confusing Calibre (which Rai is addressing), it works great.

Re: New Fanfic Downloader Beta

We have this, because the maker has worked hard to make it despite the pitfalls of cloudflare. Also he has been working on one incarnation of this or another for many years.
It may not work like it used to, but it's possible he'll get it there, but at least we have one still being worked on.
If you're having problems, put them in the contact form on the beta site constructively and if there is a fix, then cool. I get frustrated as well, but not at the program. It starts with fanfiction.net.

Re: ot: creating a playlist as a gift?

Hi.

There are three methods I would look at. Firstly you could copy the files to their phone and create a playlist in some piece of software like phonograph, there is a list of local music apps here:?
Another option would be to host either an Emby (open source), Plex (low cost closed source) or Roon (high cost/quality closed source) media server and then set up albums and playlists there.

In any of these cases, you need to download the files in some format probably either non-DRM MP3/AAC or FLAC, or purchase CDs and then rip them in order to put together the playlist.

Personally, I use Plex for my music, as even though it is non-free I am able to control the files, and the interface is better than Emby IMHO. I hear really good things about Roon, I just can't justify the cost.
