Picked up my own "cloud" a week ago. 5 second hand HP server systems for ?30. All working, all ready to have operating systems installed, and even some network goodies to go with. Windows 7 on most and Windows XP on one (I need Xpo on at least one system to be able to use a tape drive and to configure my security cameras when they go spla. One of them is too new, and doesn't like being switched off, so it'll probably end up with Linux on it. Now, I need to finally rewrite my database program for my mineral collection. No excuses anymore. Alysson Rowan LinkedIn:?????? Academia:??? Project Blog: YouTube:?????? On Mon, 25 Apr 2022 at 18:44, grenouille7777 <grenouille7777@...> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJohn, you're a man after my own heart. I've done that for years (yard sales, too). Even the two brand-new laptops I've bought in the last couple of years only had Windows on them long enough to register them with the manufacturers (Dell and Lenovo) for warranty purposes. Afterwards, the drives were immediately low-level formatted and Arch Linux was installed. The desktops I've had -- new or used -- have always been frankensteins. As far as "The Cloud"? I have three Debian servers, any one of which is capable of acting as a private cloud server should I decide I need one. As I haven't done that yet, I guess I don't. I even turn Google Sync off on my phone as soon as I buy one -- followed by geo-location services. Mike Decaffeinated coffee is like a hooker who only wants to cuddle. I agree with the sentiments expressed by this group.? Furthermore when updating to a new computer, the choices we had before such as deciding whether to update or not, how to store on our own computers, deciding how to personalize our programs we use and many, many other choices we had are disappearing.? I find it extremely aggravating that computer manufacturers are deciding what we can choose and eliminating our other choices.? I find myself in pawn shops buying older computers (for pennies) that people have gotten rid of, using Windows 7 and other older programs and working around the newer machines so I can retain my basic rights of what and how - will be on my own d**n computer.? Yeah, it takes extra effort but I am much happier with my electronic life!On Mon, Apr 25, 2022 at 8:22 AM Riothamus Pendragon <riothamus@...> wrote:

They are pushing for storage In The Cloud? - no matter that research departments *cough* NASA *cough* have terabytes of strteamed data on magtape, and that M$ have essentially told the world that those tapes? are no longer permitted. All of the research telemetry from naval vessels, military aircraft and weapons tests are on tape - and there is? no way on God's Green Earth? that any government is going to put classified data into the cloud - let alone restricted and secret data. Just as well that there is the *nix option (that's what most of the later systems use, before that, it would have been a mixture of proprietary OSs.) Alysson Rowan LinkedIn:?????? Academia:??? Still on Windows 7. I even installed XP on a machine because M$ decided that no one was to use a tape drive any more from Win 7 and upward. They actually installed tape blocking rather than just removing the support modules. Ba$tard$. Cheers, Alysson Alysson Rowan LinkedIn:?????? Academia:??? Project Blog: YouTube:?????? The original reason I started using Linux was a computer that got it's OS borked and I didn't have the money to replace it. Win 11 is a good example, purposely locking out old hardware unnecessarily, because their main customer is the computer manufacturers not the users.

That always irritates me, but it's the stock response. Computers are one of the few durable goods where you can't just keep using the thing for years but are forced to continue to buy new models for dubious reasons, mostly to line the pockets of Microsoft and the computer manufacturers. I say this because Linux users can get far more use out of the same hardware. On 4/24/2022 7:45 PM, Karen Lewellen wrote:

Here's the second set asked for.
These are just what I have minus any duplicated sections due to being on two groups.
I don't think I missed any but it's possible.

Here's the Henri Poitier et l'Voyage Inattendu one. The DW/HP one will take a little bit more time.
Still have to convert it to PDF from emails.

sometimes I can edit a fanfiction.net link to fanfiction.ws and reach the content. sometimes even google searches done in basic html will provide fanficction.ws links that work when fanfiction.net links fail. Same can be said for m.fanfiction.net. Which for me got broken again recently. On Sun, 24 Apr 2022, Cere Burn via groups.io wrote:
