Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
Huh. A simple yet clever solution, and while I haven't tried it I'm sure it _will_ work from an Admin command prompt. Nice one. Thanks.

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
Thanks, that worked for MacOS. Very good work.
But since no one has been able to upload or update stories I'll just keep track of any progress toward restoring normalcy in FFN.

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
The Linux equivalent is located in
/etc
And is also called "hosts"
You will need to be the root user (or have sudi permissions) to edit this
file

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
Here is a solution that works. This is for windows, this might work on others depending on how you deal with hosts.
If ff.net still isn't working for you on windows,
Open admin command prompt
Enter

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
The way is simple, the problem is that when this happens I have no idea what numbers to plug in for Pit of Voles, that's what the DNS is supposed to provide automatically.

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
On Linux you can put that into /etc/hosts (which has the same name as on Windows as both took the idea and name from BSD afaik).

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
Hey All,
This is the post I saw from Gustav Persson on Caer, hope this helps, it explained it best from their thread IMO;
Open notepad as administrator.
Go to the dialogue and open

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
In theory, just where does one edit the host file?
is it in a browser preference?
Mine are Linux based.

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
It's been down for between 24 to 48 hours depending on where you live, they are supposedly working on it to get it back up. The suggestion to? edit hosts file will get it back

Re: Did fanfiction.net go bye-bye?
Delia,
It’s not super difficult. Look online for instructions on editing hosts file and add this line and save it.
