I've always looked at any story I write as being AU the moment the first
word of the story makes it to the page, be it electronic or paper.? I am
not going to write the story that another writes, and I'm certainly not going to
write at JKR's level.? (Personal opinion is that I'd be writing DOWN to her
level after HBP, but that's just a very dissatisfied reader talking.)

That is
exactly why I won't write a post HBP fic. It's far too
limiting.
Why be annoyed about your story being AU? We knew Sunset would be AU
from the moment the first word was put into a word processor file. Its
sequel will be even more AU. Our first two stories are totally AU now
thanks to HBP. And personally I think our stories are better than HBP
but thats beside the point. :)
