Ooh, that title reminds me of [Fantastic Elves and Where to Find Them][1] and [The Handbook of Elf Psychology][2] by [evansentranced][3]. It's been a number of years since I last read them, but I think it fits your kid fic vibe very well, or at least the first one does.
