Yeah, but all well over
$150 -- way past my budget at the time. I miss my old Hayes --

Odd - I'm seeing listings for USR 56K external
modems all over the place.? Kind of surprised USR is still
around, honestly.
Probably, but
until a couple of years ago I still had an external modem
that I used for faxing things as the medical profession
(until fairly recently) didn't like sending/receiving
patient info by email. They still don't, but will accept
thing through their web portals. Anyway, in the long run,
it was more practical to install the dedicated com port as
it was a permanent part of my system.
Sadly, some smoke escaped from it one day and I've had a
hell of a time finding a replacement. As I refuse to run
Windoze, most of the internal modem cards (as well as many
USB ones) are less than useless to me.

I have used Win7,10,11 with PuTTY and a
USB-to-Serial cable with no problems.

I just looked at the Putty installed on my Win10
computer and I didn't
see "serial" as an option anywhere.
On the other hand, the Win10 computer doesn't have
any serial ports
either. I'll check the copy on my 20 year old
98SE/XP computer, the most
modern working computer I have with a serial port.
