Cloud is only useful in a specific scenario; when you would otherwise have a lot of unused server time if you had your own servers. If you skip the step of calculating the trade off, you¡¯re stupid. Which, unfortunately, too many executives and managers are.

Management-level executives suffer a very special kind of stupid.

One that requires the unshakeable belief in a non-thermodynamic economy.
In their world, free lunches are a thing, magic is real and the Easter Bunny
lays golden eggs. They also have a unique naivetie and gullability that leads
them to believing everything that a salesman says.

Oh, I know you actually do end up paying for it.??

But like you said, magic cloud means it must be cheaper there.? Even if it isn't.

Yes you are. What do you think you're paying for?

My company's bill with AWS runs to about $45k USD - per *month*.

Doing the same work on-prem would cost about $100k USD - per *year*.

Yeah, there'd be some CapEx to set it up - but that's a tax write off anyway?

But executives see the cloud as magic and common sense goes out the windown.

The idea behind it is you don't have to pay for servers and floorspace.

Honestly, speaking personally, I cannot imagine what purpose cloud
computing actually has? to the individual, other than allowing other
computers to do what you, or your office, or your company can better do on
their own.
