Nutter and Associates, Inc. is a small environmental consulting firm with offices in Athens, Georgia and Asheville, NC. We provide a broad range of integrated services, technology and expertise for environmental and land management issues.? We are a small but growing company, and we¡¯re committed to creating a supportive and positive work environment for our employees (especially the folks working outside all day!) and providing quality outputs for our clients.

We are currently seeking 1 crew chief and 4 technicians to help complete various archaeological projects in the southeastern region. These projects are expected to last into spring 2025, and work beyond that is expected. These are full time, temporary 1099 positions with a strong possibility to transition to full time permanent employee positions. Pay ranges for technician jobs are based on federal GSA rates, dependent on work location (county), and include a $4.93/hr Health & Welfare EO 13706 stipend as well as 11 paid holidays. Paid vacation is available with one year of service.

Rates start around $24.50/hr for technicians and the pay rate for crew chiefs is $30.00/hr. Per Diem and lodging is provided per the GSA rates for these projects. It is not necessary to be local to Athens or Asheville, but residence in the southeast is preferred. Drive time to and from the project area is paid, as well as mileage.

Our current and upcoming projects are Phase I surveys in Cherokee National Forest (Johnson and Carter counties in Tennessee), Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest (various locations in Greene, Putnam, Jasper, and Jones county in Georgia), Bankhead National Forest in Alabama (Bibb county), and Effingham county, Georgia (we¡¯re trying to keep folks in the southern areas in the winter, and move north to beat the heat in the spring/summer of 2025). ?

Field Technicians

?

Field Technicians are responsible for assisting the field supervisor in identifying and recording cultural resources in the field. This includes performing pedestrian survey, excavating shovel tests, identifying and documenting cultural materials (artifacts and features), filling out appropriate site forms and monitoring logs, site/artifact photography, and GPS-based data collection.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor¡¯s degree or higher in Archaeology/Anthropology or related field
  • Field school from an accredited institution or prior professional experience
  • Knowledge of standard archaeological field methods for all phases of investigation
  • Understanding of the primary themes of prehistory and history in the southeastern US
  • Understanding of data collection using handheld GPS units
  • Experience reading maps and using a compass; orienteering skills strongly desired.
  • Ability to dig, kneel and crouch for extended periods of time, lift at least 40 pounds, walk long distances across challenging terrain, and maintain adequate fitness to perform tasks
  • Ability to work independently outdoors in hot or cold temperatures, in conditions that may include wind, rain, and/or snow

Pay range for this position starts around $24.50/hour and is dependent on experience and education.

Crew Chiefs

?

In addition to the qualifications above for field technicians, the ideal crew chief candidate will also have:

  • Master¡¯s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or closely related field preferred. Previous experience as a crew chief will also be considered.
  • Prior experience with ArcGIS Collector/Field Maps apps
  • Familiarity with Section 106 processes and NRHP eligibility criteria for sites
  • Excellent attention to detail, a positive work ethic, reliability, and commitment to working both independently and in a team environment
  • Strong organizational skills with task and time management
  • Excellent leadership skills in the field
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a clean record and access to reliable transportation

Pay range for this position is $30/hour, dependent on experience and education.
