archaeologist GS-09/11 permanent position. This assignment will be part
of the Planning Team for the district and is responsible for all
archaeology activities on the district including maintaining the district
data base, collecting and analyzing data on all district activities,
developing maps for inventorying and monitoring purposes, working with
the NEPA coordinator with environmental analysis, and ensuring curation
of all artifacts on the district. Established contacts with Mississippi
State University, Cobb Institute will be a critical role for this
position as well as conducting P.I.T. projects, working with local groups
interested in heritage resources, special projects, hiring and
supervising summer students, challenge cost share opportunities and
contracts. This position will be under the immediate supervision of the
Supervisory Planning Team Leader. This position will also be advertised
through demo authority."

"This district is comprised of 66,000 acres of pine, pine/hardwood, and
hardwood forest. We manage lands in Oktibbeha, Winston, Choctaw,
Chickasaw and Pontotoc counties. Our district budget is roughly $1.2
million for 18 PFT positions and 22 SCSEP enrollees. Program of work
includes management of two of the most visited Forest Service Recreation
areas on the National Forests in Mississippi, Choctaw and Davis Lake
Recreation Areas. We have hiking, horse and ATV trails and are in the
process of building a mountain bike trail. We have a timber target of
22,000 CCF. There are two research natural areas, and several botanical
study areas. There are two wildlife management areas operated within the
forest boundaries. Our fire program consists of approximately 10,000
acres of prescribed burning, with smoke jumper detailers assisting us for
one month during the winter. We have an active summer student program

Houston and Starkville are all expanding communities due to large
industries moving into the area. Ackerman is also expected to grow
because of a lignite mining operation that has located just outside of
town. The Tombigbee Ranger District is within a two hour drive of over

demands for recreation, special uses, fisheries and wildlife. The
district is home to numerous locally rare plants and animals along with
several threatened and endangered species."

"Ackerman's current population is approximately 1,800. For potential
college students, Choctaw County has a program called the Sumners Grant,
where residents of Choctaw County (Ackerman is within the county) are
eligible for monies to attend college. This trust fund currently has
$35,000,000. The amount of the grant varies from year to depending on
the income from the trust and the number of students enrolled. School
systems in both Ackerman and Starkville are highly rated within the
state. There are both private and public schools in Starkville and
Louisville. Vo-tech centers are also available at most commuting
locations. There is one day-care facility in Ackerman. There are
several facilities to choose from in Starkville. There is no Forest
Service day-care available at the Ackerman office. There is also no
Forest Service housing. House prices within the commuting area generally
run a wide range, with the majority being from $80,000 to $120,000. A
large variety of religious denomin ations can be found within the
commuting area as well. There are hospitals and physician services in
the local area, with a large complex located at Starkville and Columbus.
Chamber of Commerce information is also available at the following:

Full time postions Huston or Cincinnati

R. Joe Brandon

I must reiterate for the new folks on the list that shovelbums proper is not a
discussion list. If you want to discuss things (such as why are there so
many Brandons in archaeology...this posting is a forward from another
branch of the Brandon tree who harkens from Tennessee....;-) then please
sign up for the shovelbums_gossip list. The folks on gossip signed up
expecting dialouge, the folks on this list only want to see or post job
announcements. As the list is young these mis-steps are not to be unexpected.
But as a number of you have written me encouraging me to keep this list
"dialouge" free I will continue to do so. So thanks for grinning and
bearing it and keep the job announcements coming.

....now onto the job's!!!!.....

Well, Shannon, here's one of the first things you learn as a shovelbum:
After you have a year or two of experience and meet another field tech.,and
discuss your individual experiences in the field you will find that either
you each know some of the same people or have worked with the same person.
My son, Dan worked on that cemetery project in Houston.
