shovelbums update

R. Joe Brandon

Folks,

I want to remind you all that shovelbums was not advertised as a discussion
list. This list is simply for job announcements, rumors of where jobs are,
queries of where jobs might be. To be fair to the majority of the
subscribers please do NOT post generic questions to this list. Multiple
case offenders will be removed at my discretion for the greater good of
the list. Also remember this list is designed for professional
practicing (or student) archaeologists looking for gainful employment, not
amateurs or pot hunters. I would also like to discourage anyone from
posting "I am qualified for X" postings, these postings which would be more suitable for shovelbums_gossip, not this list.
When shovelbums.com is up finally I am hoping to have a section for people to
do self promotion but this list is not the medium. I do understand folks
desire to do those promotions though and do encourage you to set up a
dialouge on shovelbums_gossip for such discussions.

Sorry if this is a bit harsh, but as the list is new now is the
time to set the rules that will guide it. I do not want to begin loosing
subscribers becayse this list is not what it was advertised to be.
This list has a very narrow focus for a good reason. If there
are any comments on this policy please drop me a note off list at
shovelbums@...

Thanks for your time.

Re: Pipeline Project

I have made two very strange finds in the woods in southeastern virginia.
both of which are stones..one white, one granite..the white stone is about
4"x10" and two connecting sides of it (one length side and one width side)
have been filed down so their edges are smooth..the filing also made them
at a roughly right angle to one another..the granite stone is triangular,
with all of the sides filed down smoothly..it's obvious these are man made
and not naturally occuring
they were found within 150 yards of one another
are these property markers? indian implements? tombstones? or what?
anybody know?

Hello to the List:

I heard a rumor about a very large pipeline project from New Orleans to
Pensacola, I don't know who or where they are working, but it might be a
lead to check out. Work is on-going or getting ready to start up soon.

want to know if there are any job openings or leads in the northeastern

Re: Digest Number 11

There are several contract companies in the Mid-Atlantic area that you can
check out. I don't know any specifics about who may be hiring right now,
though. In NJ, URS Greiner is a large engineering firm that hires
archaeologists. They have a great reputation, both among people who work
there and their clients. MAAR is located in Newark, Delaware, but I don't
know much about them. People who have worked for them have seemed happy.
CHRS (Cultural Heritage Research Services) is located north of Philly, about
10 minutes off the PA Turnpike. They hire field techs full time,
permanently, and give benefits after a few months (rare!). There are many
more companies in the area--lots in the Wash. DC metro area that you could
check out, also. Again, the best idea is to call the State Historic
Preservation Office and ask them to send you their list of companies. Good
luck!

Hello all. I've recently joined this list to see what comes across it, so
that annoucements can be added to the Archaeological Fieldwork Server on
the web. In case you haven't visited before, the AFS lists a great number
of fieldwork opportunities - paid positions, CRM jobs, field schools,
whatever is submitted or found on the 'net. All are invited to send
postings for the AFS and to use it to find leads to any sort of fieldwork
of interest.

Re: new member of shovelbums...(me)

Kyle Kearney

Daniel,
Just contact your state's SHPO and they will furnish you with a
list of the contract companies that work in their state. While they do
not include every single company/person the list will probably help you
out a lot. A good idea is to contact several different states which
you might be interested in working in and get their listings too. Send
out as many resumes as you can with a cover letter explaining your
interests. Most companies do not advertise a lot of their project
openings due to the fast start up time, so they go directly to the pile
of resumes they have on file. This is the prime time of year for
sending out a lot of resumes. Hope this helps.

To shovelbums,
I'm a December grad from the U. of Northern Iowa.
Luckily, I've had a

I have little difficulty finding job announcements
for these (and other)
gov't positions.
My question: how do I find out about private sector
arch. positions?
I've heard of a few agencies, even within the state
of Iowa, but I've had no
luck locating them. Any suggestions?
Thanks....Daniel VanVuren

Daniel,

Your best bet is to contact your State Archaeologist to see who they
have listed in their files. Most offices maintain a listing of folks
that either have offices in that state or at least do work in that
state. I found this to be my best source when tracking down private
sector jobs.
