Archaeological Field Technicians –Louisiana

Coastal Environments, Inc. (CEI), a woman-owned, full-service environmental and cultural resources consulting firm, is seeking full-time temporary Archaeological Field Technicians for assignment to an upcoming Phase III Data Recovery project near Lake Charles, Louisiana. Fieldwork is expected to begin in early June 2025 and last for approximately 4 months. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to commit for the duration of the anticipated fieldwork. This project will require brief daily travel by boat to access the project site.

Minimum Background Requirements for Field Technicians:

? Successful applicants will have earned a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited university and will have majored in Anthropology or a closely related field.

? Successful applicants will have a minimum six (6) months of relevant field experience or will have completed an accredited field school.

Minimum Skill and Experience Requirements for Field Technicians:

? Successful applicants will be familiar with field methods and will be expected to perform hand excavation.

Per diem and single occupancy lodging will be provided for any projects where overnight travel is required. Most projects are anticipated to follow a Monday-Friday schedule with 8hr to 10hr workdays, but candidates should be willing to accommodate flexible schedules according to specific project needs. Occasional work on weekends may be required for some projects. Compensation may vary according to candidate qualifications, but candidates can expect to receive between $20 and $25 per hour. Archaeological Monitors and field technicians for Ongoing Project Work in Eastern TN (Greeneville vicinity)

Project Description and Schedule

UES is hiring several archaeological monitors and field technicians to help conduct ongoing monitoring and survey efforts in eastern Tennessee (in the general vicinity of Greeneville). We have project-specific work opportunities that will develop into career-trajectory placement for the right person. The monitoring and phase I survey is a large and ongoing effort, with crews already in the field and project work expected to continue for several weeks at least.

Compensation

The hourly wage for this project will be between $28 and $35, commensurate with experience, attitude, and ability to commit to longer-term sessions. UES’ preference is for a field tech local to Eastern TN but will consider applications from non-local techs. For non-local techs, UES will pay for drive time and accommodation near the project area, along with $68 per diem and a $10 weekly cell phone stipend. UES. Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with a construction crew to ensure safe and efficient monitoring practices.
• Coordinate field crew progress and ensure daily data transfer.
• Prepare accurate daily monitoring logs.
• Collect, organize, and conduct quality assurance and quality control for field data.
• Assist with technical reporting.
• Support and maintain UES’s high standards of ethics and quality.
• Conduct shovel testing and pedestrian survey for a Phase I Archaeological Survey under the supervision of a UES Field Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Merjent, Inc. (Merjent) is seeking archaeological field technicians to provide technical support to professional archaeologists. Archaeological technicians will utilize a basic understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, and evaluating cultural resource sites, conducting pre-field office research, field surveys, and site testing, using a variety of reference materials.??

Archaeological field technicians will be hired into 1 of 3 levels (1, 2, or 3), based on the experience and qualifications of successful candidates. If hired as a level 1 or 2, there are opportunities to advance to higher levels.?

These are seasonal positions that are expected to begin in April 2025 and end in October 2025. Employment may continue beyond October if there is continuing work available. The pay rate for these positions starts at $22.50 to $28.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. • Conduct archaeological monitoring, surveying, testing, and excavation in support of Phase I, II, and III studies in accordance with a research design to identify, record, and evaluate historic and prehistoric cultural resources.?

• Contribute to and/or complete Resource/Site Forms in compliance with state/agency guidelines.?

• Collect and inventory artifacts, ecofacts, and samples in accordance with the research design, and keep an accurate field specimen log.?

• Conduct photo-documentation of artifacts, features, excavation units, land use, landscapes, historic structures, archaeological sites, specialized equipment or technique usage, and work-in-progress.?

• Adhere to project health and safety plans and participates in office and field trainings and meetings.?

Archaeological Field Technician 1 (0-2 years of experience):??

o??? Perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks on archaeological survey projects and at archaeological field sites.??

o??? Assist Field Lead in activities associated with the excavation of project areas and found features.??

o??? Complete walk-over survey, shovel testing, and excavation of the project area to identify archaeological materials such as historic and prehistoric remains.??

o??? Assist in preparation of sketch maps and field forms, as well as field photography.?

Archaeological Field Technician 2 (1-3 years of experience):??

• Perform skilled tasks, conduct hand excavations, complete plan and profile maps of excavated units, complete standard feature and level forms, and screen soils to recover artifacts.??
• Perform flotation of soil samples, walk-over, and shovel testing.??
• Catalog, package, and label archaeological artifacts.??
• Maintain field equipment and supplies.??
• Conduct inventories of cultural resources in areas of proposed projects.??

Archaeological Field Technician 3 (2-5 years of experience):?

• Interview source individuals concerning project areas.?
• Perform on-the-ground area searches for surface and subsurface evidence of historic and prehistoric archeological remains.?
• Identify and record historic and prehistoric cultural resource sites.?
• Prepare Archeological Reconnaissance Reports (AARF's) and maps.?

Job Description

The role will be to assist with research, fieldwork (survey, monitoring, excavation), and/or laboratory tasks for AZTEC's Cultural Resource Group.?

Duties:

• Assist with all types of archaeological field investigations (survey, monitoring, testing, data recovery)
• Apply standardized field methods and complete field forms thoroughly and accurately
• Assist with lab work and report preparation
• Use a tablet, compass, trowel, shovel, pick, hula hoe, and screen
• Perform archaeological research and conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories
• Communicate effectively and work closely with fellow employees
• Perform travel that may include overnight and/or out-of-state stays for extended periods of time

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

• Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience
• Completion of academic-sponsored field school or a minimum of six (6) months of experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM)
• Previous experience performing archaeological excavation
• Understanding of Southwest and/or Great Basin prehistory and/or history, archaeological method, and theory
• Experience using GPS and GIS applications, particularly ESRI Field Maps, and digital site recording applications
• Ability to generate, organize, and maintain accurate field records that meet state and federal standards and guidelines
• Familiarity with AZSITE and other agency site file systems is preferred
• Familiarity with laboratory protocols for artifact processing/curation preparation is preferred?
• Experience with the respectful treatment and housing of ancestral remains is preferred
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team; strong initiative
• Ability and willingness to travel within or outside AZ for up to 80% of the year
• Ability to perform fieldwork in adverse conditions (rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, arid environments, dense vegetation) and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment
