ROLE DESCRIPTION?AND DUTIES

The ideal candidate is a motivated and detail-oriented Archaeologist, willing to provide a full range of archaeological services for diverse projects across California. In this role, you will split your time between fieldwork and office-based tasks, conducting archaeological surveys, monitoring, excavations, and data collection. The ideal candidate will be passionate about archaeology, have a strong work ethic, and be eager to expand their skills while working closely with seasoned professionals. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to exciting projects, travel to various field locations, and play an integral role in preserving and documenting cultural resources. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct archaeological surveys, monitoring, excavations, and testing across diverse project locations.?

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with pedestrian surveys, shovel test unit excavations, and data recovery projects.
  • Familiarity with California-specific archaeology and cultural resource management (CRM) practices.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in remote environments, including hiking, digging, carrying loads up to 25 pounds, and standing for extended periods in variable weather conditions.

Archaeological Field Technicians- Arizona ($23.06/hr)

 

Espinoza Consulting Services has immediate openings for archaeological field technicians for work in Arizona. Positions are hourly/temporary, but long-term employment is possible. The hourly wage is $23.06 based on SCA wage determination for the project location. All federal holidays and educational stipends are standard for all full-time ECS employees. Per diem and/or accommodations are provided for out-of- town assignments at GSA rates.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Preferred qualifications include a BA in anthropology or archaeology and 2 years field experience in the Southwest and/or Great Basin region.
  • Preference will be given to individuals who have excellent field, writing, computer, and GPS skills.
  • Able to walk up to 10 miles a day; lift up to 40 lbs.; identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features; conduct archaeological survey and testing; complete sketch maps of features and sites; complete field forms accurately and concisely; use a GPS unit; and photograph resources.
  • Be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, high elevation, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures).
  • Good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn.

The ideal candidate will lead and contribute to the growth of SummitWest's Cultural Resources Program by securing new work contracts, identifying future opportunities, and aligning high-quality systems and teams to drive profitability and achieve long-term objectives for both SummitWest and its clients. As a Senior Archaeologist, they will be an experienced field archaeologist with laboratory expertise, capable of leading teams or taking on high-responsibility field roles such as Field Director.


The successful candidate will leverage their existing and expanding client network to enhance SummitWest¡¯s presence across various industry sectors. They will actively grow the department by engaging with clients to build strong relationships, exceed expectations, and showcase the full range of SummitWest's capabilities.


This role requires a deep understanding of environmental compliance, with the ability to identify and implement appropriate mitigation measures. The Senior Archaeologist will remain well-versed in CEQA, NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA, and other relevant local, state, and federal regulations, including experience with Native American consultation. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with Senior Leadership to design and implement strategies for developing a successful Cultural Resources (CR) Program.
  • Ability to oversee and independently manage SummitWest CR Projects.
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain client relationships, ensuring high-quality deliverables and client satisfaction.
  • Proven ability to identify opportunities for business growth and collaborate with Senior Leadership to expand the company¡¯s client base.?

Multiple Cultural Resources Specialist positions are available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii.

The Cultural Resources Specialist positions will support cultural resource compliance activities, prepare and evaluate National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 undertakings and documentation, coordinate and attend stakeholder meetings, and recommend cultural resource and compliance management activities to Command to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as Department of Defense policies and procedures. A high degree of analytic acumen, initiative, and resourcefulness; proven leadership skills and team-building capabilities; and excellent oral and written communication skills are critical to success in this position.

The positions include a combination of office and field activities involving execution and oversight of cultural resources support tasks, including but not limited to, identifying, documenting, monitoring, and protecting cultural resources; preparing information and analysis in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and other historic preservation and environmental laws; managing cultural resources artifacts and records and geographic information; participating in historical research efforts; preparing and distributing material and assisting with consultation efforts; implementing treatment measures; developing and presenting outreach material; and facilitating safe public access to cultural resources.

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII: One Cultural Resources Specialist will provide on-site cultural resources management support for U.S. Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH). This position supporting MCBH will be duty-stationed at Kaneohe Bay with occasional travel to other MCB Hawaii installation areas, including Camp Smith, Pu¡®uloa, Marine Corps Training Area Bellows (MCTAB), Camp Smith, Pearl City Annex, Manana Neighborhood Housing, and Waikane Valley.

Kaneohe Bay is located on the Mokapu Peninsula on the Northeastern coast of the island of Oahu. This area was initially a valuable agricultural area for the Kingdom of Hawaii with several home sites, fishponds, small ko¡¯a shrines, and larger heiau temples. In 1918, Kuwaaohe Military Reservation was established by the U.S. Army. The military site experienced multiple deactivation, reactivation, and name changes between 1918 and 1939. In 1940, the U.S. Navy acquired much of the peninsula. On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the station minutes prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Throughout World War II, the air station was a major training base in the Pacific Theater. Decommissioned by the Navy in 1949, the U.S. Marine Corps re-commissioned Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay in 1952.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS/MA degree in anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, cultural resources management, history, or related field.
  • Meet the Secretary of Interior¡¯s professional qualification standards (36 CFR, part 61) and/or applicable Office of Personnel Management (OPM) standards in accordance with Section 112 of the NHPA (54 USC 306131).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-graduate professional work experience that demonstrates a thorough understanding of the principles and theories of cultural resources management. Heritage Consultants, LLC a Connecticut-based cultural resources management company, is seeking several Seasonal Field Archaeologists for upcoming projects work throughout New England, New York, and beyond. Our company has a backlog of fieldwork that will last throughout 2024 and into 2025. Fieldwork will include Pedestrian Surveys, Phase I Surveys, Phase II Testing Projects, and large Phase III Data Recovery Projects for a variety of different client types.



Qualified candidates must have:

  • Bachelor¡¯s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field;
  • Completed an accredited archaeological field school;
  • Experience performing archaeological survey and excavation;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;?
  • Ability to work well with others and be a proactive part of a project team;
    Detailed note taking skills;
  • A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation;


Project Schedules:

Project schedules may vary from 5-days a week to 10 day on/4 days off. Travel time to and from project areas is paid. Single occupancy hotel rooms are the standard on all projects away from the home office.

Compensation:

?

Starting pay is $19 but may be increased depending upon experience. Per diem of $45 per day is standard; no receipts required. Personnel who meet or exceed performance expectations may be eligible for full time employment and benefits.

In the role of?Project Archaeologist, we'll count on you to:
  • ?Manage archaeological surveys and site documentation, including feature and artifact identification and analyses; performing shovel test pits (STPs); site descriptions; photographs; and mapping
  • Possess the technical knowledge to supervise archaeological field technicians and crew chiefs in field and office settings
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams in our Resources (strong focus on power market sector), Transportation, and Water Business Groups in the South Central (TX, OK, LA) region and nationally to help plan, staff, and execute major cultural resource management efforts?
  • Manage the production of professional quality reports for NRHP and NEPA compliance.
  • Perform other duties as needed

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to record cultural resources in the field without any physical assistance (this could include hiking short distances in scrub and native vegetation)
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in person, by telephone and email
  • Must be able to effectively work in minimally supervised and/or unsupervised environments
  • Work hours other than 8 to 5 which may include weekends and/or night shifts
  • Must have a valid Driver¡¯s License
  • Be able to operate a vehicle day or night
  • Approximately 50% travel required to project sites as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field. With anticipated testing and data recovery projects anticipated as part of the workload, archeologists with experience in any of the following are encouraged to apply: bioarcheology, zooarchaeology, geoarchaeology, GPR/magnetometer survey, and/or ceramic analyses
  • Minimum two years' experience managing junior staff during fieldwork and report preparation
  • Experience identifying and recording prehistoric and historic resources
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures)
  • Must have good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks
  • Willing to provide a writing sample
  • Competence in Microsoft Word, Excel and Project
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or closely related field
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Self-starter with excellent writing and communication skills
  • Willingness to work under varied weather conditions
  • Successful candidates must be familiar with field study design and documentation, regulatory framework for cultural resource management, and GIS utilities
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
