archaeology activities on the district including maintaining the district
data base, collecting and analyzing data on all district activities,

million for 18 PFT positions and 22 SCSEP enrollees. Program of work

Houston and Starkville are all expanding communities due to large
industries moving into the area. Ackerman is also expected to grow
because of a lignite mining operation that has located just outside of
town. The Tombigbee Ranger District is within a two hour drive of over
two million people. It is becoming challenging for the district to meet
demands for recreation, special uses, fisheries and wildlife. The
district is home to numerous locally rare plants and animals along with
several threatened and endangered species."

"Ackerman's current population is approximately 1,800. For potential
college students, Choctaw County has a program called the Sumners Grant,
where residents of Choctaw County (Ackerman is within the county) are
eligible for monies to attend college. This trust fund currently has
$35,000,000. The amount of the grant varies from year to depending on
the income from the trust and the number of students enrolled. School
systems in both Ackerman and Starkville are highly rated within the
state. There are both private and public schools in Starkville and
Louisville. Vo-tech centers are also available at most commuting
locations. There is one day-care facility in Ackerman. There are
several facilities to choose from in Starkville. There is no Forest
Service day-care available at the Ackerman office. There is also no
Forest Service housing. House prices within the commuting area generally
run a wide range, with the majority being from $80,000 to $120,000. A
large variety of religious denomin ations can be found within the
commuting area as well. There are hospitals and physician services in
the local area, with a large complex located at Starkville and Columbus.
Chamber of Commerce information is also available at the following:

You may also located these via web sites."

May archaeology jobs

R. Joe Brandon

Hey shovelbums,

This is the summary of all jobs that came through the shovelbums
list for May. If you are not already using it, and if your mailbox has
too many messages as it is, don't forget you can send the message

shovelbums-digest@...

to switch you account status to digest mode.

If you are going into the field for the summer and do not want your
mailbox getting cluttered then log onto and set
your account status to "no mail", instead of unsubscribing. This way you
can still access the archives at your discretion but will not receive
e-mail from the list. When you return, just log back on and switch your
account to "mail". I have a request into onelist to have this feature be
availble by e-mail but it is not enabled yet.

If you are new to the field business and the jobs listed below do not fit
into your region then I encourage you to make use of Kris Hirst's
excellent resources availible at:

Thanks for spreading the word about this list and to the professors who
are subscribe to keep their students informed. The list size is slowly
growing, at last count we had 280 company reps, professors, and
shovelubums. The signups leveled off when I had to start
working on finals and my thesis and was only able to advertise the list
to about half the universities in the country, hence the regional
variation in job postings :) If you are in the field or at school I
encourage you to post this list and show your
webless friends how they can setup an e-mail account at any of those free
services such as Yahoo/Juno/Hotmail and sign up to find out where the
jobs are!

As always shovelbums@... is a postings only list. Please send
any questions or comments to me personally at shovelbum_rjoe@...
but not to the list (note the iname.com not onelist.com address, this
will be rectified when I get the shovelbums domain set up).

I would also like to hear from those of you who have A: found jobs
through the list, or B: found employees through this list.

The June issue of work listing summaries will not be out until mid-July
as I have to go to Ecuador for some geophysical work at the end of the
month and get some page proofs back to my editor.

Now onto the jobs! Please print and post where possible.

resource specialist (archaeologist or architectural historian), based in
Central Office.

Please note that although job duties are nearly identical and that all
positions are considered State of Pennsylvania employment, the employer will
be either PennDOT or IUP with minor differences in conditions of employment.
The Interagency Agreement between IUP and PennDOT last for 3 years. At the
end of the Agreement, in the Year 2002, PennDOT will add five additional
positions; individuals working for IUP will be encouraged to apply for these
additional positions.

The salary range starts around $33,000. There is an excellent benefit
package including paid life and medical insurance, dental and vision care
programs, annual and sick leaves, and a retirement plan.

These are Non-Civil Service positions. Vacancies are currently and will
continue to be open until all vacancies are filled. IUP will begin
interviews after June 15, 1999. To express interest, please contact either
Dr. Ira Beckerman, PennDOT Cultural Resource Group Leader, at (717) 772-0830
(e-mail: beckerman@...), or Dr. Beverly Chiarulli, IUP
Archaeological Services, at 724-357-7623 (e-mail: bevc@...).
Please note that applications will need to be made to either PennDOT, IUP,
or both, and that applications to one agency are not necessarily
transferable to the other. There has been no closing date established for
these positions as of this announcement. However, it is the goal of PennDOT
and IUP to fill these positions as soon as possible.

Iowa Work

R. Joe Brandon

Two announcements:

1 - This came in a few days ago from Lauri Chappell (lchap@...) at
Berger. I was on the road hence the delay for getting this out.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Berger currently has crew positions open immediately in Iowa.
Applicants must have a BA degree in Anthro or a related field and a
field school to qualify. We offer benefits to our crew members!!
Please pass the word along that we have positions available for
extended periods. I can be reached at 319/373-3045. Interested
crew members should fax their resume to me at 319/373-7566.
----------------------------------------------------------------

2 - Shovelbums now has over 300 subscribers, with a fair number of these
from overseas, primarily Europe and Australia. However these users have
commented that the only job postings being broadcast on here are for US
work. I would like to request that any subscribers who are aware of CRM
type firms in other countries send a note to me at:

rjoe_brandon@...

and let me know how to contact these firms so that they can use this medium
to advertise jobs. Or if you are related to one of these firms if you
could spread the word and help expand the international job postings on
shovelbums.

Thanks.
