We are looking to hire a full time Project Archeologist-level individual to support our increasing workload in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. This full-time position is a remote, work-from-home position, but will require frequent travel to and from job sites in Texas and adjacent states, and to meet with other staff in the home office. The ideal candidate need not be based in Austin, but ideally should be based in Texas, a nearby state, or willing to relocate.

Working with Acacia’s core team of talented staff, and under direct supervision of company principals, this person will provide assistance with project tasks at various levels including, but not limited to project planning and implementation, fieldwork and staff supervision, artifact analysis, research, technical reporting and overall project management. Responsibilities will include leading and supervising field staff for all phases of archeological investigations, writing technical reports that apply National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility criteria, developing appropriate field methodologies for cultural resources projects, recording and evaluating cultural resources, preparing maps using GIS software, analyzing artifacts, coordinating regulatory compliance efforts with federal, state, and municipal agencies, supervising and mentoring junior staff, and providing other support and technical assistance as needed.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology/Archeology or related field with completion of an accredited archeological field school
  • The ability to successfully plan and implement cultural resources surveys, testing and data recovery projects.
  • Ability to work with a team to execute project deliverables.
  • Ability to work from home.
  • Ability to travel to different project locations at least 40% of the time, to walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for 8-hr days, in inclement weather, or rugged terrain.
  • 3-5 years of previous archeological experience, with at least two years as a field supervisor or higher.
  • Experience using a GPS and collecting data using digital applications.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State preservation laws and regulations in the states where Acacia works, as well as NEPA, and Section 404 Permitting requirements.
  • Experience working in Texas and surrounding states.
  • Previous experience directing field crews and in project management.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, QGIS, and the ESRI suite of software
  • The ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:
  • Master’s degree in Anthropology or closely related field that meets the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology.
  • Specialized skills and expertise in one or more of the following: historical research, lithic analysis, faunal analysis, human osteology, geophysical studies, or analysis of pre-contact period ceramics.
  • Experience working with FHWA guidelines and state departments transportation (DOTs)
  • Experience in other regions of the county.
  • A track record of operations development and project management.

This position as a Project Archaeologist is a full-time position. The employee will participate in both office and field activities. The employee will function as part of a team to support the Principal Investigator and Providence’s clients for a variety of projects. Field Archaeologist - EDR is seeking experienced, team-oriented?Field Archaeologists?with demonstrated expertise to provide support to the EDR Cultural Resources practice area by assisting with archaeological fieldwork, laboratory analysis and/or office work. Reports to the Principal for Cultural Resources via the Archaeology Services Leader and Field Supervisors. This role would be an hourly position (March through December, weather dependent) based in the Northeastern United States.

Field Archaeologists provide support for field investigations, and in some instances, associated laboratory and/or office work. EDR’s Field Archaeologists include seasonal and temporary employees (i.e., employed on a per project basis) and report to the Principal for Cultural Resources via the Archaeology Services Leader and Field Supervisors.

Schedule and Compensation

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8-hour days (40 hours weekly, off Saturday and Sunday; our typical schedule may need to be adjusted to meet specific project demands, although that is unusual).
  • Compensation: $20-$23 per hour, based on experience and work history; overtime paid for hours worked above 40.

What You Will Contribute

Location: West Mojave Desert

Nonprofit organizations requires a part-time Field Archeological (average 30 hours per week) to assist with off-highway vehicle restoration projects on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the West Mojave Desert.

Friends of Jawbone (FOJ) and Friends of El Mirage (FOEM) are non-profit organizations in support of off-highway vehicle recreation in the West Mojave Desert. Among our activities are restoration projects on public lands managed by the BLM. Each year we restore 20-30 miles of motorized routes that are designated closed, with current projects in the Jawbone, Rand Mountains, El Paso Mountains, El Mirage, and Stoddard Valley regions. Rate of pay is based upon experience.

Responsibilities Include:

? Self-navigating backcountry roads to specific proposed restoration worksites; vehicle provided

What you will accomplish

  • Manage Salt Lake City’s internal databases and manage the Salt Lake City agency permits
    • Responsible for tracking and revising all archaeological and curation permits/agreements
    • Responsible for coordinating staff resume updates for permit renewals and modifications
  • Mentor and train newer employees on working on database and cultural resource reports
  • Work independently to manage and resolve database issues with SWCA’s Technology Solutions Team
  • Ensures?that appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, and that necessary equipment, staff, and other resources are ready for fieldwork.
  • Supervises staff, including archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring and ensures quality and completeness of data collected.? More specifically:
    • Interviewing, selecting and onboarding new hires
    • Providing direction, training, coaching, performance management and feedback to direct-line supervisees, as well as all field crew members while under deployment
    • Provide corrective actions with staff members, working with HR as needed on discipline and/or discharge
    • Complete field skills assessments on all crew members, providing feedback to ensure team members are learning and advancing skills while work is being performed on time and on budget
    • Complete performance reviews with regular status supervisees, ensuring employee engagement is high and career development plans are actioned
    • Participate with Project Managers, Team Leads and Program Director on overall talent management of the Cultural Resources Program including evaluating staffing levels, scheduling, retaining/continuing/exiting employees, assigning work, determining promotional/status opportunities, making compensation decisions, etc.
  • Communicates regularly with the Project Managers,?Associate Project Managers, and field crews?to ensure that a project’s budgetary and timetable needs are met.
    • Provide quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC) between fieldwork and reporting tasks
    • Provide feedback on QA/QC to field crews and project managers
  • Takes initiative, resolves problems, and creates improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
    • Contribute to SWCA’s technical programs and suggest improvements to the Salt Lake and SWCA programs
  • In coordination with the project manager and principal investigators to?organize report writing and production effort and prepare technical reports.
  • Supervise all lab work to ensure that the project goals, schedule, and correct curation methods are being met in coordination with the Project Managers, Principal Investigators, and Program Director.
    • Complete QA/QC tasks for artifacts collected from the field
    • Coordinate laboratory data entry following fieldwork.
    • Track and order lab equipment. Ensure that equipment is maintained properly. Assist with management of field equipment as necessary.
    • Ensure that samples for out-of-house analysis are properly prepared. Track and follow up on the status of all samples sent out for analysis.
    • Coordinate regular revisions to SLC CR lab procedures materials (artifact analysis guides, curation instructions, etc.).
    • Coordinate schedule for use of the lab space between natural resources and cultural resources staff.
  • Maintains SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance; is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.


Experience and qualifications for success

  • A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in cultural resources management on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Experience providing QA/QC review of field documents, site forms, and reports preferred.
  • A minimum of one (1) year?of experience in laboratory methods and/or artifact analysis is preferred. Hands-on experience with artifact types common to the Great Basin and Intermountain West is also preferred.
  • Fundamental understanding of databases, as well as Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability is required. Management or leadership experience in any aspect of cultural resource management is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner.
  • Understands or has a willingness to learn agency-specific permitting guidelines and repository-specific curation guidelines.
  • Ability to multi-task and retain good organizational skills with attention to detail.

ARCHEOLOGY CREW - DEVIL'S POSTPILE NATIONAL MONUMENT - MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIFORNIA

 

, founded at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998, is a mission-driven non-profit organization headquartered in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. GBI has been a leader in the conservation stewardship field for over two and half decades, supporting thousands of individuals pursuing a career in public land management or advancing their academic standing. In partnership with Devils Postpile National Monument (DEPO), GBI seeks an Archaeology crew.?

The NPS is responsible for protecting and managing over 420 individual “units”, including 63 National Parks, 74 National Historic Sites, and other designated areas such as battlefields, monuments, nature preserves, and more.

The project will begin in June conducting background research and developing the technical approach for the project. Once the park opens, the crew will serve as the on-site park archeologist.?
Duties include conducting archeological site assessments, drafting determinations of eligibility, supervising others in the field and lab, and providing archeological site monitoring as needed to accomplish project goals.?


Additional Duties:?

  • Research and compile information on history of work and content of known sites within DEPO.
  • Work closely with DEPO superintendent, YOSE CR staff, and other NPS staff as needed. Support the superintendent’s consultation with traditionally associated tribes during all phases of the project, providing opportunities as appropriate for project input, participation, and guidance from interested tribal members.
  • Develop and implement a work?plan for archeological evaluation of approximately ten (10) archeological sites known at the park, supervising others in the field and?lab work needed to accomplish goals.
  • Develop information to make Determinations of Eligibility under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) for each site and for the archaeological landscape.
  • Construct a technical report needed to document work performed, analysis of data collected, and support arguments of significance as appropriate. Follow standards for archeology as per the State of California and NPS-28. Work in this project will provide experience needed to meet qualifications under the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Archeology.


During the off-season (typically November-June), this position will focus on report writing and collections management.? Most off-season work may be done remotely from an off-site location, but travel to curation facilities or to the park offices may be required during the off-season to fulfill project goals and park needs.


The necessary skills are as follows:

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Good communication abilities, both written and oral.
  • An interest in cultural history and/or archeology and the management of information pertaining to these fields.
  • Database management and/or GIS knowledge and experience.
  • Cultural history research and writing skills.

The Employee Facility includes a shared kitchen, restrooms and shower rooms. It also has a shared lounge area with satellite TV. Internet and television use satellite connections that may not have consistent reception. Canvas tents are located on plywood platforms and are furnished with bed(s) and electricity, but they have no water nor kitchen facilities.

Inexpensive camping options and off-site dormitory housing may also be available. No on-site park housing will be available outside of the peak season (typically June-October). However, off-site dormitory housing may be available for rent at Mammoth Lakes, Lee Vining, or Mono City on a case-by-case basis.

Vehicle Access Restrictions: Reds Meadow Road is the only vehicle access to Devils Postpile National Monument.? This road is not maintained in winter and only opens when road conditions are safe for public travel.? Due to road construction Reds Meadow Road will not open for public access before June 7, 2024 and will only be open to the public Friday mornings at 9:00 AM until Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM. Reds Meadow Road will be closed 24 hours per day for construction work Sunday at 11:00 PM through Friday morning at 9:00 AM.? When the road is not open to the public, employee and park resident’s vehicles will only be permitted in and out of Reds Meadow twice a day in scheduled caravans that guide them through the construction The park is scheduled to close to the public on October 27, if snow storms or other weather events do not cause it to be closed for the season at an earlier date.? No in-park housing is available when the park is closed for the season. It is recommended that applicants bring their own personal vehicle but it is not required. Government vehicles are available to car-pool between the NPS offices in the town of Mammoth Lakes and the park.? Once in town, there is bus service within Mammoth Lakes, but there is much to explore in the surrounding area.

Job Description

Archaeology Field Technicians will work closely with Archaeology Field Supervisors and will be responsible for implementing surveys methods and documenting findings in accordance with all applicable standards and guidelines.? Specific job responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Carry out archaeological investigations (Phase I identification, Phase II evaluation, Phase III data recovery, and archaeological monitoring) in a Cultural Resources Management setting;
  • Conduct archaeological excavation outdoors in all weather conditions in both rural and urban environments; with overnight stays on out-of-town projects when required;
  • Work with and provide support to other members of the Archaeology Group in assisting with other field and laboratory activities as required;

THE PERSON

The ideal candidate:

  • They are familiar with standard office software packages and have the ability to work as a team member.
  • Our desired, well-rounded candidate will be able to conduct a variety of field investigations, alone and under the direction of a Project Manager, in variable terrain and in all weather conditions.
  • They will draft technical reports, assist with NEPA documents, coordinate and communicate project status, and maintain schedules and project budgets.

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an?Archaeological Monitor?(HR Title: Assistant Staff Compliance Monitor) to join our team in the Rocky Mountain Plains subregion (Bismarck, North Dakota; Denver and Fort Collins, Colorado; and Sheridan, Wyoming). This is a distributed position, welcoming applicants from outside these office locations.

As an Archaeological Monitor, you will be responsible for various project tasks, including working independently, coordinating with construction crews, monitoring construction progress, maintaining detailed records, and documenting cultural resources. You will also conduct inspections of construction areas, identify cultural materials, utilize tablets for data collection, adhere to state-specific protocols for site recording, and conduct evaluations for the National Register of Historic Places.?

For an assistant staff compliance monitor position, a key element of your job will be to independently supervise an archaeological survey crew in the field.

This is an hourly, regular-status, benefitted position for the duration of the monitoring project, expected to run approximately from June to mid-November 2024. In accordance with the construction schedule, work hours will vary between 10 to 12 hours per day, Monday through Saturday, with Sundays off. Lodging and per diem are covered seven days a week, and weather days are covered. Rental trucks will be provided for use on-site.

This multi-year project may offer opportunities for returning work annually, with efforts made to extend employment to other projects upon seasonal project completion. Compensation ranges from $24.15 to $30.98 per hour, commensurate with experience and role, with overtime pay at time-and-a-half. Additional benefits include paid sick time, paid travel time between the project location and project lodging, and single-occupancy lodging in SWCA-leased apartments. Per diem is $59 per day.


What you will accomplish

  • Work collaboratively with a construction crew to ensure safe and efficient monitoring practices.
  • Perform monitoring fieldwork and provide assistance to project managers with various field tasks.
  • Coordinate the progress of the field crew and facilitate daily data transfer.
  • Prepare accurate and detailed daily monitoring reports.
  • Collect, organize, and conduct quality assurance and quality control for field data.
  • Potentially assist with technical reporting as needed.
  • Uphold SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and assurance, demonstrating the ability to identify and creatively resolve challenges.
  • As a staff compliance monitor, you will be asked to supervise a small crew while conducting archaeological monitoring field work.? This includes:?
    • independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery;
    • ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely;
    • serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers;
    • receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field; and
    • monitoring team productivity and providing timely performance feedback, including deciding when disciplinary action is necessary and delivering discipline.


Experience and qualifications for success

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience with a variety of field methods, including survey, testing, and excavation.
  • Possession of a current valid driver’s license and the capability to safely operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle on rugged backcountry roads.
  • Ability to travel to various locations and conduct fieldwork for extended hours, sometimes in adverse weather conditions, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes. Must be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with archaeological monitoring of construction sites.
  • Ability to be listed with relevant archaeological permits.
  • Secretary of the Interior qualification.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervision abilities, including problem-solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.
