1 Full-Time Field Team Director in Tucson

WestLand Engineering and Environmental is adding a Field Team Director, Cultural to our team! The Field Team Director provides day-to-day support to project leads for all aspects of field personnel deployment throughout the western United States. This includes the scheduling and dispatching of field personnel, booking lodging when necessary, and ensuing that field crews have appropriate safety gear, equipment, & transportation. The Field Team Director may assist project leads with reports and proposal writing and may also assist the Department to coordinate new hires. Finally, the Field Team Director will act as a resource to field personnel with expense and timesheet reporting. This position will be based out of our Tucson office but will provide support to our cultural teams across the west.

The hourly rate range for this position is $27.00 - $36.00 per hour.

What will I be doing?

  • Managing all departmental archaeological (and historic preservation) field crew.
  • Identifying project field personnel needs as directed by project leads.
  • Coordinating advertisements and supporting the screening, hiring & onboarding process.
  • Assigning field team personnel to field or office projects.
  • Coordinating project details and needs such as hotel, field vehicles, general logistics and safety support.
  • Supporting timesheets and expense reporting in coordination with project leads.
  • Assisting project leads with data management, analyses, report preparation, and proposal & budget development.

What qualifications are required for this role?

  • Bachelor’s (or graduate) degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or related field.
  • Five years’ supervisory experience in a cultural resource management laboratory, office, or field setting.
  • Previous project experience with most aspects of cultural resource management project execution.
  • Ability to foster relationships with a range of diverse employees and offer client support when requested.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products and sector-specific software as required.
  • Effective communication and people skills (written and oral).
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Gulf South Research Corporation (GSRC) is seeking to fill field archaeologist positions for the 2024 field season. This position involves Phase I pedestrian survey and shovel testing in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Area. The work is estimated to begin the week of April 22, 2024, and last 2 to 3 months.

Salary range is $21 to $25 per hour, dependent upon experience. Given the contract for this project is local to GSRC’s main office in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Area, no per diem or lodging is included. Transportation will be provided from the office to the work site. This travel time will be paid.

Duties

  • Perform archaeological survey (pedestrian and shovel testing) under the direction of project Crew Leaders and Field Director.
  • Excavate and document excavation units as components of archaeological evaluation and data recovery projects.
  • Participate in additional work as appropriate according to skill level, experience, and ability.

Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field.
  • Archaeological field school or 3 to 6 months of relevant field experience.
  • Ability to maintain steady pace while accurately taking field notes on standardized forms.
  • Familiar with field maps and navigation.
  • Ability to work efficiently in adverse environmental conditions, including hot temperatures, precipitation, and challenging terrain while carrying 30+ lbs of gear for sustained durations.
  • Archaeological knowledge of the precontact and post-contact periods, including ability to recognize and preliminarily identify regional artifacts.
  • Ability to work individually and as a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and work well under pressure.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to reliably commute to either the GSRC’s offices or project locations.

Preferred Experience:

  • One year field experience.
  • Experience with general principles of GPS data collection systems (Garmin and Trimble).
  • Experience with local artifact assemblages, lab, and curation procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Conduct and lead fieldwork in compliance with state and federal laws.
Identify, document, and catalog precontact and post contact era cultural materials.
Locate and document archaeological sites using topographic maps, field sketch maps, and electronic mapping devices such as total stations, GPS, and GIS technology.
Author, coauthor, or edit technical scientific reports and correspondence in compliance with state and federal law.

The work that you will do directly improves the quality of these forests helping ensure they continue to thrive for generations to come.

This work provides professional development and leadership opportunities in cultural resource management including increased exposure and responsibility enacting USFS processes, procedures and compliance measures; assisting in reporting and data entry/quality assurance and control. Expanded opportunities and exposure to additional disciplines (e.g., forestry, wildlife, hydrology, etc.) and projects may exist.

Archaeology technicians perform a variety of activities to support all stages of project implementation. Crew size will range between 2-6 people.

Primary archaeology field duties will include:
  • Collaborate with Archaeology crew lead and agency staff to support field safety, communication, planning, logistics, quality assurance, field implementation and reporting efforts;
  • Complete field surveys to document, assess and characterize the status of new cultural resources;
  • Monitor existing sites and complete site updates and condition assessments;

Location:
We are hiring for multiple positions in the Eldorado National Forest. The Eldorado National Forest is located in the central Sierra Nevada within the ancestral territories of the Miwok, Washoe and Nisenan people.
Portions of Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, and Placer counties lie within the forest boundary. The forest is bordered on the north by the Tahoe National Forest, on the east by the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, on the southeast by the Humboldt-Toiyabe, and to the south by the Stanislaus National Forest.

The forest is located within 3 - 4 hours driving time from the San Francisco Bay Area, a metropolitan complex of 4.5 million people. Sacramento is located within 1 - 1 1/2 hours driving time from the forest with a population of over 1,000,000 people.

The Tahoe National Forest is found in the north central Sierra Nevada. It stretches from the foothills overlooking the Sacramento Valley on the west across the Sierra crest to the state line. The largest community on the eastern slope is Truckee which provides outstanding recreation year-round and has an abundance of historic and cultural charm. On the Westside of the TNF, Auburn and Grass Valley/Nevada City are the largest communities and provide a wealth of cultural and outdoor recreation opportunities. Throughout the rest of the forest, many small towns, harkening back to the gold rush and Comstock Lode mining eras, provide a variety of amenities, interesting historical sites, and neighborly ambience.

The Tahoe National Forest is the homeland of several Tribal Nations, including the United Auburn Indian Community of the Auburn Rancheria, the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, the Colfax-Todds Valley Consolidated Tribe and the Nevada City Rancheria. Location:
The four counties within the Forest’s immediate sphere of influence are Alpine, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne. These counties are primarily rural in nature, and are characterized by rolling foothill and/or steep mountainous terrain, very low population density, and an attractive and unspoiled natural environment. The latter three are in the heart of California’s historic “Mother Lode,” and contain many historically significant Gold Rush era towns, and both historic and prehistoric heritage sites.

Collectively, all four counties have an abundance of outdoor recreational sites, including numerous rivers, lakes and reservoirs, two state parks (Calaveras Big Trees and Columbia State Parks), one national park (Yosemite National Park), several alpine and nordic ski areas, and portions of several national forests, including the Stanislaus, El Dorado, Toiyabe, and Sierra National Forests.

Alpine County is the smallest of these four counties, with 465,030 acres (727 square miles) of land, all at high elevation on the crest of the Sierra Nevada. A total of 423,520 acres, or 91%, of Alpine County is located within the national forest, of which 124,285 acres are within the Stanislaus National Forest (the remainder being located within the El Dorado and Toiyabe National Forests).

Calaveras County has a total of 663,290 acres (1,036 square miles) of land. Of this total, 75,072 acres (11%) are located within the Stanislaus National Forest.

Mariposa County is the second largest of the local counties, with a total land area of 934,690 acres (1.460 square miles). The county contains portions of both the Sierra and Stanislaus National Forests, as well as the greater part of Yosemite National Park. Mariposa County has no incorporated cities, and 84,456 acres, or 9% of the total land area, is located within the Stanislaus National Forest.

Tuolumne County, the largest and most populated of the local counties, has 1,467,300 acres, or 2,293 square miles, of land. The county contains Columbia State Park, as well as a portion of Yosemite National Park. A total of 611,395 acres, or 42% of the county’s land base, is located within the Stanislaus National Forest.

, in cooperation with the USFS, is recruiting Archaeology Crew Leads to complete Section 106 cultural resource surveys, site recording, and monitoring for various projects within the Stanislaus National Forest. These projects all serve the Cultural Resources program’s greater mission of helping the USFS in their critical goal of improving forest resilience in the face of worsening climate conditions and increased wildfire threats. The work that you will do directly protects sensitive cultural sites, helping ensure the stories they tell are preserved for generations to come.

The Archaeology Crew Lead position provides professional development and leadership opportunities in cultural resource management including increased exposure and responsibility enacting USFS processes, procedures, and compliance measures; assisting in reporting and data entry/quality assurance and control; and increased technical experience. Expanded opportunities and exposure to additional disciplines (e.g., forestry, wildlife, hydrology, etc.) and projects may exist. This position will serve USFS vegetation management and fuels reduction efforts, supporting initiatives for healthy, productive, and resilient forest landscapes and resources.

The Archaeology Crew Lead will perform a variety of activities to support all stages of project work. Leads will be responsible for crew safety and oversight, provide or assist in training, and communicate with agency and GBI staff as needed. Crew size will range between 2-6 people. Primary archaeology field duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead archaeology crew to conduct and complete field surveys to document, assess and characterize the status of new cultural resources.
  • Monitor existing sites and complete site updates and condition assessments.
  • Prepare California DPR site records, GIS maps, and photographic records in addition to inputting data to the USFS heritage database.
  • Lead and collaborate with agency personnel and all other crew members to support field safety, communication, planning, logistics, quality assurance, field implementation, and reporting efforts.
This physically demanding work, often in remote locations, will provide Archaeology Crew Leads with rewarding exposure to some of California’s backcountry forested landscapes. These positions require extensive hiking in steep terrain at high altitudes (5,000-9,000 ft.) with heavy packs on a daily basis, possibly during extreme or inclement weather conditions such as heat, snow or rain. Work schedules, generally four 10-hour days with 3 days off each week, are subject to change depending on weather and project needs. Camping near a work site for several days may be required to meet project objectives.


Contract Timeline:
  • Start and end dates may vary according to local conditions: Tentatively mid-May through mid-November.
  • Projects are weather dependent and there is always a chance the season will end earlier if weather prevents safe field operations.

Location:
The four counties within the Forest’s immediate sphere of influence are Alpine, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne. These counties are primarily rural in nature, and are characterized by rolling foothill and/or steep mountainous terrain, very low population density, and an attractive and unspoiled natural environment. The latter three are in the heart of California’s historic “Mother Lode,” and contain many historically significant Gold Rush era towns, and both historic and prehistoric heritage sites.

Collectively, all four counties have an abundance of outdoor recreational sites, including numerous rivers, lakes and reservoirs, two state parks (Calaveras Big Trees and Columbia State Parks), one national park (Yosemite National Park), several alpine and nordic ski areas, and portions of several national forests, including the Stanislaus, El Dorado, Toiyabe, and Sierra National Forests.

Alpine County is the smallest of these four counties, with 465,030 acres (727 square miles) of land, all at high elevation on the crest of the Sierra Nevada. A total of 423,520 acres, or 91%, of Alpine County is located within the national forest, of which 124,285 acres are within the Stanislaus National Forest (the remainder being located within the El Dorado and Toiyabe National Forests).

Calaveras County has a total of 663,290 acres (1,036 square miles) of land. Of this total, 75,072 acres (11%) are located within the Stanislaus National Forest.

Mariposa County is the second largest of the local counties, with a total land area of 934,690 acres (1.460 square miles). The county contains portions of both the Sierra and Stanislaus National Forests, as well as the greater part of Yosemite National Park. Mariposa County has no incorporated cities, and 84,456 acres, or 9% of the total land area, is located within the Stanislaus National Forest.

Tuolumne County, the largest and most populated of the local counties, has 1,467,300 acres, or 2,293 square miles, of land. The county contains Columbia State Park, as well as a portion of Yosemite National Park. A total of 611,395 acres, or 42% of the county’s land base, is located within the Stanislaus National Forest.

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Wage: $26/hour with overtime at 1.5x hourly rate. Full time, average 40 hours per week.

  • Proficiency in navigation using GPS, topographic map and compass;
  • Ability to recognize and record prehistoric and historic artifacts, features, and architecture
  • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads;

The Forest Service, a federal agency in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, administers the Sequoia National Forest which consists of three ranger districts. The Giant Sequoia National Monument has two separate sections; the northern portion located on the Hume Lake Ranger District near Dunlap, California, and the southern portion on the Western Divide Ranger District just east of Springville, California. The Kern River Ranger District lies at the southern end of the forest near Lake Isabella.

The Sequoia is one of nineteen National Forests in California. It takes its name from the giant sequoia, the world's largest tree, which grows in more than 30 groves in the forest's lower elevation slopes. The Sequoia's landscape is as spectacular as its trees. Vegetation of the two subregions ranges from temperate rainforests with enormous, world-record-height trees along the coast at Redwood, to barren shrublands on infertile soils and rock in the sagebrush desert of Lava Beds. Whiskeytown NRA was directly impacted by the 2018 Carr Fire. Work completed by the archaeology team will help to address the monitoring and recording of cultural resources post-fire and aid in the management of park cultural resources going forward. Job Description:

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the USFS, is recruiting an Archaeology Crew Lead to complete Section 106 and Section 110 cultural resource surveys, site recording, and monitoring for various projects within the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. These projects all serve the Cultural Resources?program’s greater mission of helping the USFS in their critical goal of improving forest resilience in the face of worsening climate conditions and increased wildfire threats. The work that you will do directly protects sensitive cultural sites, helping ensure the stories they tell are preserved?for generations to come.

The Archaeology Crew Lead position provides professional development and leadership opportunities in cultural resource management including increased exposure and responsibility enacting USFS processes, procedures, and compliance measures; assisting in reporting and data entry/quality assurance and control; and increased technical experience. Expanded opportunities and exposure to additional disciplines (e.g., forestry, wildlife, hydrology, etc.) and projects may exist. This position will serve USFS vegetation management and fuels reduction efforts, supporting initiatives for healthy, productive, and resilient forest landscapes and resources.

The Archaeology Crew Lead will perform a variety of activities to support all stages of project work. Leads will be responsible for crew safety and oversight, provide or assist in training, and communicate with agency and GBI staff as needed. Crew size will range between 2-6 people. Primary archaeology field duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead archaeology crew to conduct and complete field surveys in areas planned for forest projects to document, assess and characterize the status of new cultural resources.
  • Monitor existing sites and complete site updates and condition assessments.
  • Prepare California DPR site records, Nevada IMACS site records, GIS maps, and photographic records in addition to inputting data to the USFS heritage database.
  • Lead and collaborate with agency personnel and all other crew members to support field safety, communication, planning, logistics, quality assurance, field implementation, and reporting efforts.

Primary office duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Performing literature reviews and project background research.
  • Assisting with Section 106 and Section 110 reporting, including drafting project maps.
  • Drafting both California DPR and Nevada IMACS archeological site records, archeological site maps, and archeological sketch maps.
  • Assisting with GIS data management.

Contract Timeline:
The work schedule during the winter and spring is full time and flexible, depending on project needs. The work schedule for the field season (summer – fall) is generally four 10-hour days with 3 days off each week, but is subject to change depending on weather and project needs. Camping near a work site for several days may be required to meet project objectives.

Location:
This physically demanding work, often in remote, mountainous locations, will provide Archaeology Crew Leads with rewarding exposure to some of California’s backcountry forested landscapes. This position requires extensive hiking in steep terrain at high altitudes (5,000-9,000 ft.) with heavy packs on a daily basis, possibly during extreme or inclement weather conditions such as heat, snow or rain.

  • Physically fit to work outdoors, carry up to 50 pounds of personal and/or field equipment, hike up to 10 miles a day, and withstand the rigors of a forested and/or high desert environment in all seasons.

Station archeologists split their time between Public Archeology, Teaching, Station Administration, Research, and Professional Service, the weighting of effort between those five areas being variable as appropriate to the position.

The Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project (MPPP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on the protection and preservation of archaeological features and cultural landscape of the Mesa Prieta region of the northern Rio Grande Valley. MPPP seeks to hire a Project Archaeologist who aligns with our mission of education, outreach and promotion of heritage stewardship.

PROJECT ARCHAEOLOGIST DUTIES: The full-time Project Archaeologist will be tasked with managing the Preservation arm of the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project. Duties include (but are not limited to): Recording and cataloging petroglyphs and related archaeological features in a permanent archive to be accessed by researchers, planners and communities; identifying areas of petroglyph concentrations and documenting archeological features; overseeing the recording of all data pertaining to petroglyphs and other archaeological features; organizing fieldwork and field survey; developing and leading ongoing recorder trainings with new and experienced crews of volunteer citizen scientists; and regularly submitting data to the New Mexico Cultural Resource Information System (NMCRIS).

Other duties include: Assisting in grant writing; managing and operating an annual summer youth intern program; assisting in occasional fundraising activities or tours for potential funders; representing the Project in conferences and professional meetings through written media or other presentations; and communicating/liaising with professionals, agencies, government, landowners, organizations and local tribes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: 2-5 years of experience as an archaeologist, anthropologist, or researcher. Experience with data collection and management, manage project databases using FileMaker (petroglyph and cultural landscape databases), Microsoft Office including Access, leading fieldwork and managing multi-year (large) data sets, experience with digital field recording systems, demonstrated experience working with youth and adult education and outreach initiatives, project design and implementation.

Preference given to applicants with a record of public speaking, presentations, published research and building strong collaborations among tribes, organizations, volunteers, and staff. Archaeological Field Director, West Virginia, $25-30/hr DOE

 

Apogee Environmental & Archaeological, Inc. is seeking an Archaeological Field Director to lead an upcoming Phase I survey. The project is a large solar facility near Charles Town, West Virginia and will require pedestrian survey and shovel testing. The project is expected to start in mid-late April and could last into June. The work/mobilization schedule has yet to be determined, and it will be based on the needs of field personnel. Principal Senior Archaeologist– Full Time/Permanent - Mid-Atlantic/Northeast

RGA is seeking to hire a Principal Senior Archaeologist to be based in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast. At RGA we have a diverse staff of archaeologists, architectural historians, and historians and have been completing projects in the eastern united states for over 35 years. We historically and currently have a wide variety of projects including Phase II and Phase III/Data Recovery projects in addition to complex federal contracts and are looking for a skilled and experienced archaeologist to join our management team.

Prior work experience in CRM the mid-Atlantic is preferred. This position can be based remotely (ie work from home) but candidates should be located in the mid-Atlantic or Northeast regional area. There is also the option for in-person work at either our Philadelphia, PA or Cranbury, NJ office. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and typically ranges from $85,000 – $105,000.

Day to day responsibilities include:

  • Coordination with review agencies including various SHPO, federal and state agencies.
  • Direct, plan, organize, and manage archaeological surveys, site recordation, monitoring, and other duties in operational regions
  • Supervise and mentor project archaeologists and principal investigators working on multiple projects
  • Review and edit archaeological survey reports, including technical writing.
  • Communicate with clients on survey results and ensure that projects are performed within budget, in accordance with project schedules, and follow federal and various state review agency guidelines.
  • Management of all aspects of cultural resource projects and must have advanced experience in proposal writing, technical report reviews and senior staff management.
  • Direct contact with federal, state, county, municipal, and private clients, and interface with regulatory agencies.

Qualified applicants should possess:

  • MA/MS or Ph.D. degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or related field.
  • Experience with the archaeology, prehistory, history and ethnohistory of the mid-Atlantic region (preferred)
  • 10 years of experience as a Principal Investigator
  • 5 years as a project manager with diverse project management experience on small and large project types
  • Experience with various regional, state, and federal cultural resource management regulations, including a good working knowledge of NEPA and Section 106.
  • Advanced ability to prepare technical and cost proposals.
  • Technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Collegiality in working with architectural historians and historians as part of a team environment.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) designation is preferred.?
  • Experience with geophysical surveys would be a plus
  • Experience with Tribal Nation consultation and coordination would be a plus
