Hi folks,
I just wanted to give you brief information on the status of Shovelbums:
First off, many thanks to the volunteers who are helping ot moderate the
Shovelbums list. They are making Shovelbums an efficient 24x7 level
announcement service. At some point this fall I will pass on a short
bio and a list of their names so that when you see them at the
conferences you will be sure to buy them a drink.
Secondly I wanted to announce a new feature at Shovelbums. While not
work related, it has an entertaining side to it. Introducing SHOVELBUMS
TEAM SETI. It has been my experience through the years that many of us
are also happy Sci-fi geeks and with the proliferation of computers the
SETI@HOME project is a valuable use of your computers idle CPU cycles.
So I have organized TEAM SETI as a way for archaeologists to
collectively utilize their resources for a common good. You can join
the effort and have as much fun as finding an
intact hearth on survey.
Thirdly - The list is now up over 2200+ members. With the new college
semester starting soon around the globe I wanted to remind those of you
venturing back to the halls of academia from the summer in the field to
try and pass the word about Shovelbums.org to your institution. If you
are in an anthro club, make an announcement, if your department has a
bulletin board, print out the main shovelbums.org page and post it
there. Thanks for spreading the word!
