Beaver Creek Archaeology, Inc. (BCA), a cultural resource management (CRM) consultancy with offices in Bismarck, ND, and Artesia, NM, is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Full-Time Seasonal Archaeological Construction Monitor(s).

BCA conducts project work throughout the central-western United States, with a significant focus on the Great Plains region. This role focuses on overseeing and documenting archaeological resources during construction projects. Monitors are essential for ensuring regulatory compliance, identifying archaeological features and artifacts, and collaborating with supervisors and construction teams to protect cultural heritage while supporting project goals.

Position Overview

This position is based out of our Bismarck, ND office; however, the project involves a long-term construction effort in Fargo, ND. Work days and hours are aligned with the construction company’s schedule, and overtime should be expected. Overtime is paid at time and a half. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with education and experience.

• Fieldwork: Expect to be working in the same general location and area on a daily basis with the majority of the field day comprised of walking, standing, and sitting. Your physical capabilities should support this.
• Subsistence Allotments: We offer a $60.00 per day Subsistence Allotment, added to your paycheck.
• Lodging: We provide single-occupancy hotel accommodations for the duration of the work on the project.
• Transportation: A company field vehicle will be provided to ensure your transportation to and from the project area.

The project is anticipated to begin in April of 2025 and run through mid-December 2025, with the possibility of resuming in Spring 2026. The actual start and end dates of the schedule are highly dependent on ground and weather conditions, which are critical for ensuring the construction crews can safely and successfully complete the project work.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Site Monitoring: Conduct on-site archaeological monitoring during construction to identify and document features, artifacts, and potential impacts.
• Data Collection: Record archaeological findings, including detailed documentation of artifacts, features, and other discoveries.
• Communication: Liaise effectively with construction crews, project managers, and regulatory agencies to convey monitoring requirements and findings.
• Collaboration: Work closely with BCA supervising archaeologists and construction teams to implement mitigation measures and safeguard cultural resources.
• Safety Awareness: Adhere strictly to safety protocols to ensure a secure working environment during construction activities, including participating and following the construction crew safety meetings and protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and completion of an archaeological field school or equivalent field training.

• Strong observational, organizational, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing field conditions and construction schedules.
• Physical ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Valid Driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work long hours in varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, and direct sunlight.
• Capacity for extended periods of walking, standing, and working in challenging ground conditions.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of field equipment and tools.
• Ability to effectively handle and visually assess maps, GPS devices, and artifacts with precision and care.
• Stamina for physically demanding tasks, including repetitive motions and equipment handling.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
• Prior experience as an archaeological monitor or field archaeologist in the Northern Plains region.
• Familiarity with artifact analysis, mapping, and detailed site documentation.
• Understanding of the historical context and archaeology of the Northern Plains.
• Proficiency in GPS and mapping tools.
• Knowledge of CRM principles, including federal and state compliance regulations.
