Archaeologist, Full-time, Regular Opening - Located in Iowa

Reports To: Senior Archaeologist/Project Manager

This position allows for remote work from anywhere within the state of Iowa.

?

JOB SUMMARY: This position will plan and support cultural resources projects throughout Iowa, including fieldwork coordination, field data management, deliverables preparation and support, agency coordination, and other cultural resources-related project activities.

?

  • Pre-field literature reviews

  • Background and archival research

  • Plan and coordinate fieldwork

  • Assess and manage field data collected by others

  • Archaeological site and isolate field documentation

  • NRHP eligibility evaluations

  • Draft deliverables preparation and deliverable revisions

  • Daily monitoring and/or inspection forms

  • Draft monitoring reports, testing and excavation logs, and excavation technical reports

  • Coordinate with state and federal agencies

  • Review cultural resource documents on behalf of state and federal agencies

  • Serve as a Field Director or Principal Investigator

  • Conduct Phase I (intensive) cultural resources inventory

  • Document archaeological sites and IOs/IFs

  • Conduct probing, shovel testing, and/or data recovery excavation

  • Conduct archaeological monitoring during various construction activities

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.

  • Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright¡¯s and Eocene Environmental Group's culture of safety and employee ownership.

  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed coursework leading to a degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field:

    • Crew Member ¨C minimum 2 years of college-level coursework and completion of a field school.

    • Crew Chief ¨C bachelor¡¯s degree, completion of a field school, and 1 year of professional experience.

    • Field Director / Project Archaeologist ¨C bachelor¡¯s degree, completion of a field school, 2 years of professional experience, and is permitted or qualified for agency permitting based on the SOI Professional Qualification Standards.

    • Principal Investigator ¨C graduate degree, completion of a field school, 2 years professional experience as a Field Director, and is permitted or qualified for agency permitting based on the SOI Professional Qualification Standards.

  • Proficient in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in Iowa or the Midwest.

  • Proficient in documenting archaeological sites and isolates in Iowa or the Midwest

  • Use hand-held field technology (i.e., ArcGIS phone/tablet application paired with sub-meter GPS receivers)

  • Pedestrian survey an average of 50 acres/8 miles per day (not including resource documentation) and carry personal health and safety equipment (i.e., personal water, sunscreen, etc.)

  • Work in moderate weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including rain and snow)

  • Perform work duties independently and efficiently, while working in a team setting.

  • Ability to follow instruction and to make adjustments when provided feedback.

  • Organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy.

  • Excellent navigational skills (GPS and compass) and ability to navigate and drive 4WD vehicles.

  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency using phone or tablets to document cultural resources.

  • Proficiency with sub-meter GPS receiver.

  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications (for phone or tablet).

  • Proficient with soil description methodologies.

  • Previous NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental trainings.

  • Strong writing and editing skills.

  • Strong communication and organization skills.

  • Ability to evaluate resources for NRHP-eligibility.

  • Authored multiple archaeological site forms and inventory reports.

  • Authored a master¡¯s degree thesis.

  • Prior experience supporting state and federal agencies.

  • Prior experience supporting utility compliance inspection projects.
