PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR / SENIOR ARCHAEOLOGIST

Summary

EMH&T is seeking a Principal Investigator/Senior Archaeologist on a full-time permanent basis to serve as manager of our cultural resources practice from our office in Columbus, Ohio. The position will work closely with EMH&T’s environmental and cultural resources staff to support and further develop EMH&T’s cultural resource practice. The successful candidate will assist in managing junior staff; develop and maintain agency and client relationships; assist and advise project managers; and direct and manage large and complex cultural resources projects.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position will be to serve as a senior technical lead for cultural resources management projects. This will include overseeing the planning and implementation of multiple cultural resources projects simultaneously with the help of EMH&T’s project managers; coordinating with clients and government agencies (e.g., Ohio State Historic Preservation Office and other SHPOs); assisting with budget preparation, invoicing and tracking; supervising/training/mentoring junior staff; and overseeing and ensuring technical accuracy of field investigations, data analysis, and report writing. Projects may range from small, local surveys to large, out of state projects.

Other responsibilities and expectations for this position include, but are not limited to:

• Advise and consult with project managers to ensure project compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and associated federal and state regulations.
• Serve as lead author and technical reviewer of cultural resources reports.
• Ensure technical accuracy and quality of cultural resources work products.
• Train junior staff to recognize archaeological resources in the field and perform archaeological recording tasks (e.g., mapping and preparing thorough written documentation and measured stratigraphic profiles).
• Train/mentor staff in preparing technical write-ups, including how to interpret archaeological findings and relay that information to internal and external reviewers.
• Frequent travel and work outdoors in remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, sometimes in rugged terrain and conditions.
• Help promote and maintain a safe, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
• Serve as a role model to junior staff.
• Communicate efficiently, both verbally and in written form.

Technical Qualifications

• Graduate degree (MA/MS or Ph.D.) in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field.
• Meet the Secretary of Interior's Professional Qualifications for Archaeology.
• Experience and ability to serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) for complex, high-profile projects for a variety of clients and sectors.
• Strong working knowledge of National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106, Section 110), National Environmental Policy Act, and associated federal and state laws and regulations.
• Minimum of 10 years demonstrated, full-time experience working on cultural resources projects, with progressive experience toward directing research efforts/projects.
• Must be a strong technical writer with a minimum of five years of experience as a lead author on technical reports (if selected for an interview, candidate will be required to submit three writing samples).
• The ability to independently identify Pre-Contact and Historic Period cultural resources.
• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Proficient with digital field technology (Trimble GPS) and familiar with GIS applications and software.
• Ability to lead a team and delegate tasks as necessary.
• Ability to communicate efficiently and respond quickly while working in the field or office.
• Ability to plan and manage multiple projects simultaneously, including coordinating with clients, budget tracking, supervising staff, and overseeing field investigations, data and laboratory analysis, and report writing.
• Ability to independently plan and organize work to meet fast-paced deadlines.
• Must be attentive to organization, detail, and accuracy.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with engineers, environmental scientists and other technical specialists as part of a large, multi-disciplinary project team.

Preferred Qualifications

• ODOT Prequalification in Archaeological Investigations
• ODOT Prequalification in History/Architectural Investigations
• Professional accreditation, e.g., Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA)
• Experience with cemeteries and history/architecture
• Experience and capability across the US in providing cultural resources services

• Use of electronic standard desktop and portable office equipment.?
• The ability to tolerate outdoor weather conditions and be exposed to outdoor insects, poisonous plants, and allergens for extended periods of time (8-10 hours per day throughout the year).?
• The ability to walk for extended periods of time and the ability to maneuver over rough terrain, ditches, steep banks and uneven ground.?
• Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. of equipment/materials while walking across terrain.
• Intermittent squatting, leaning, twisting and bending.
• Use of hand equipment or tools.
• Must pass a pre-employment background and drug screen.
