Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
Daniel, Yes, and no about the Sacramento Northern's North End. Most of the line was powered by 3rd rail, but there were substantial sections under wire through various towns. The Central California

Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
I was under the impression that the SN North of Sacramento was all third rail. Is this incorrect? Are there any interesting remains of the CCT? Or the Tidewater Southern? I don¡¯t know too much about

Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
Bill, The Northern Electric Railway, SN's northern predecessor, actually sprang from the Chico Electric Railway, a typical city streetcar line using overhead wire. California's other major 3rd rail

Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
In fact, it's not particularly complex at all. Overhead contact systems are inherently safer than 3rd rail and don't have any "dead spots" where a loco/car may become stranded. Only a handful of

Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
Daniel, Yes, it appears that the 3rd rail was a much lower poundage. Whether it required less maintenance is to me uncertain, but that is probably true. Overhead wire requires proper tensioning,

Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
Ah thank you Garth. I see it now. I assume the 3rd rail was a lighter poundage than the running rail? And perhaps it required less maintenance and could allow trains to run at higher speeds than

Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
Daniel, Absolutely! Look behind the motor and you can see the 3rd rail slightly raised on blocks on the side closer to the camera. At the front of the motor the 3rd rail is actually blocking our view

Fremont Photos
Friends, As a follow-up to the photo of 654 with its train, here is a Will Whittaker view of "downtown" Fremont, in fact, just about all of Fremont. The negative sleeve is dated 6/1X/40, the "x"

Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
Fantastic pictures Sir Garth. May your Quackers keep Quacking. Love the big dome Texaco tank car. Knew the steeple jobs ran 3rd rail but haven't seen many pix. Happy to see so many responses on this

Re: More SN Motors on Third Rail
Justin, See the attached Google Map. Fremont was at MP9.68, which would put it just at the western end of the curve of Route 22. The Fremont Trestle began about MP10.10, if that helps any. The SN

Re: SN 650 and Train
Daniel, Yes, shots of motors operating from 3rd rail are scarce. There are several reasons for this. When there was still SN passenger service, nearly all North End freights except branche jobs

Re: SN 650 and Train
I wonder if this is close to the SN/WP interlock railroad west of the WP Yuba River Through Truss bridges. If you look under the deck of the wood trestle below the SN Boxcar and the other tank car
