I just watched this and really enjoyed it. Makes me want to go and check it out up there. Mentions of the SN, Oakland, and other interesting history.

Hello,
Does anyone?remember what engine and caboose were used on the last day of trolley?service in Marysville in?the early seventies? Do we have pictures? ?I was in the caboose supposedly.

Best regards

Justin?

Re: Train spotting

There are no SN cars left in service. All WP marked cars are UP regardless of lettering. ~Bill?

Train spotting

A couple years ago I spotted a 50 foot WP boxcar with the large?WP lettering?coming out of Mexico between Laredo and Fort Stockton. I accidentally said El Paso on the WP list when I asked if anyone else had seen recent WP rolling stock in service. Has anyone here seen any SN or WP?cars still in service? I know UP and the Kansas City Southern have some GP-40¡¯s that were once WP still if you look on their roster.?

Re: NE: Arboga Hotel view

Bill,

Neat find. Arboga raises some interesting questions.

Arboga, California, is/was three miles South of Olivehurst. The community there was founded in 1911, and was so named by an unidentified pastor of the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden?for his home in Arboga, Sweden. The phrase "our colony" on the postcard?suggests the community might have been intended settlement for Swedish immigrants, but this is not borne out by other references I found in local newspapers. None of the references I found online give any more details. Apparently, the "colony" was more like a subdivision.

Arboga was later notorious as a temporary internment camp for Japanese Americans in WWII. Opened in May 1942, it was closed 53 days later when most of its inhabitants were relocated to Tule Lake (on the Southern Pacific's Modoc line). The Arboga camp was notorious for its unsanitary and miserable accomodations.

Re: New 44-ton models

Ian,

No. According to the RMC announcement, Hobbytyme is taking orders only through dealers. Any hobby shop with a Hobbytyme account can place an order for you.

They are only going to be DCC equipped. No analog DC models are being produced (Rapido does make their own 44-tonners this way, as well as full-blown DCC like Hobbytyme's). ? I can't justify spending $299 for features I don't need, especially since my HO stuff hasn't been used in several years.

Yes, you can reserve and purchase through him. Is a well respected dealer. Please note the units do not have the number boxes or the flasher as added by SN at Mulberry. Perhaps someone can get them made through Shapeways, etc.

NE Feather River covered bridge Oroville

Hi there:

Here is a NE Company view looking West from the Oroville side of the Feather River looking toward Thermalito. The structures in the distance are believed to be the bridgetenders shelter along with the obligatory outhouse. This bridge was lost due to flooding and replaced with a steel structure. One of the bridge concrete supports is still standing on the Oroville side of the river.?

Daniel,

The SN did not switch much of Chico during daylight hours because of the street trackage. See Allen Wood's story at? .

Really , the mice are HO !? I may have to snag a couple of those !

I remember seeing those in the late 60's in Chico as my brother attended
Chico State College back then and got a degree in Mexican History so he could
be a teacher. On our trips to Chico to visit Bill, I never saw them run up the Esplanade as they were always tied up at Mulberry.

Fun memories !

Justin,

Sorry, but the?44-tonners are HO scale:? . The SN models are NOT shown on the?web site yet.

Rapido is doing three 44-ton "phases". Phase IV bodies will be offered lettered for SN 142 and 146 models (143-145 would have been the same after their initial repaints into the Zephyr scheme). Phase Ic would do for SN 141 and 147, but those two aren't in the pipeline. It would be really cool if they offered any of these in the original black with orange stripes. I did a Bachmann 44-tonner with SP switcher decals and individual lettering, but it was a regular pain in the you know where.

Daniel,

Well . . . that's a pretty subjective question (though you have every right to ask!). I would rank the North Shore as very high, as it was arguably the most modern, efficient and well-built line in the country. On the other hand, the Pacific Electric was miles beyond either the NS or the SN in terms of roster, mileage and breadth of area served.

The SN had many interesting?features, and having seen its last gasp of electric operation at Yuba City when I was young, and photographing the dieselized SN in the 1960s and 1970s, it has always been my favorite.?

As an aside, I just saw in the new RMC that rapido is going to offer their 44-tonner in SN lettering as 141 and 146 in the full?1952 Zephyr paint scheme with all the scare stripes. I didn't buy the issue, so I don't remember if the artwork showed the roof-top number boxes and gumball?lights though. This could almost make me take up modeling the SN again, though I'm heavily into British O-scale narrow gauge these days.

I have been enjoying learning about the North Shore line recently. Though this video is not SN related, the footage came from WRM and is in full color.

Do you agree with the assertion at the end that the North Shore is the greatest interurban? The SN has to be in the top 10 for sure

David,

According to Swett's SACRAMENTO NORTHERN (p. 200), "The mainline between East Nicolaus and Alicia was abandoned on October 15, 1958." The text does not say when East Nicolaus itself was abandoned, but says on page 204 that Sankey (WP crossing) to East Nicolaus (9.8 miles) was being operated as a branch. A separate list of abandonments in my collection shows East Nicolaus south to Catlett was abandoned on January 11, 1965. Catlett to Sankey followed on January 5, 1972.
