Drawbridge

I have one of these and it is hard to decide if I would one day scratch build a swing bridge like at Dutton, a double drawbridge like the primitive wooden one further up toward Sacramento, or if they had one of these? It would be so much easier to use one ready made from Pola.

Drawbridge photos

On Bridgehunter.com some of the Sacramento Northern drawbridges are just grainy dark antique images or drawings. Are there better vintage images of either the SN drawbridges or the WP ones? They may have been on the old list, but most things were lost.?

Re: Oakland to SF Journey Late 1800s

Hi Ken,? I forgot to say that my friend was asking about using the trains. If you or anyone in our group has access to timetables, I would suggest a year close to 1890.

Thanks!

Hi,

It would be a long hike around the south.? I think it would be fair to assume 3-4mpH by foot or horse.? Then just calculate how long to Santa Clara and then how long to cover the El Camino back up to San Francisco.

Otherwise it is highly dependent on the exact date and the state of the railroad infrastructure at that time.

Re: Added new pictures of Yuba City Yard

Dave and Randy,

All the SN power bounced around a lot in the late 1970s and early 1980 before the yellow plague descended. Attached is a view of 712 working South Sacramento on the WP. I've lost the?date for this, but I left California on New Year's day 1982, so I think this was shot around 1981 on one of my last WP/SN expeditions.?

The view of 607 at Stockton is dated March 1981, and was probably shot in February. Stockton was pretty much home to 607 in her last years, joining a clutch of SW-9s that worked the yard. South Sacramento was usually worked by GP-9s or GP-7s in the last years. At least those are what I saw and photographed, but what we shoot can be highly subjective.?

Garth Groff ??

I have uploaded some images of the SN yard from July 77 and one from Aug 82.

Nothing earth shattering, but they offer a good view of units assigned to the yard and might be beneficial to any modelers interested in the WP-SN ops.

As late as Aug 1982, both SN geeps were holding down assignments at Yuba City. This may have been the last time that they were assigned to the same area. The 712 bounced around Milpitas ans Stockton post merger. The 711 worked Portola and was sent east to Omaha to become yellow and was mechanically destroyed on its way back to Salt Lake after being repainted.

Marysville depot on Mike's O Scale layout.

Somebody on this list probably has a 3D printer. I am surprised nobody has taken the plans for the Yuba City Depot, Stockton, or the Sacramento Depot found in the Western Pacific Passenger Depots book by Stephen Hayes and offered a kit, even if someone had to buy stock Spanish tile roof material separately and cut it. What a great way to start a layout.

There used to be a really odiferous onion packing plant in Vacaville that our family could smell as we drove to San Francisco on US?40. It was served by the SN. I don't remember what the plant was called (my copy of WP Circular 167-E suggests Basic Vegetable Products Co., which was a drier plant). To our family it was "Bud's Onion Factory" because my father's ne'er-do-well brother Vernon (aka "Bud") had worked there one harvest season. I think the building was torn down in the 1970s.
