Replacing 402 hot water heater

Arcadia's original Raritan 12 Gal. hot water heater has rusted out and is leaking, so it is time for a replacement.? We currently do not have a mixing valve, so I am planning to add that as well as a 3 way valve for winterizing.
?
Instead of simply replacing the Raritan, I am wondering if anyone has experience to share with using an Isotemp or Quick heater as a replacement. I see the Isotemp is stainless and plastic, comes with a mixing valve, and is less expensive than the Raritan. It looks as if either of those might require extending or replacing the heat exchanger hoses.?
?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I replaced the Raritan with a 5 gallon Isotemp with the mixer.? Has worked well, 5 gallons seems to be enough hot water.? It is plumbed with the engine cooling system and has a 110 heater.? Mike

Thanks David and Mike,

I am not at the boat now to measure the space. How are your Isotemp heaters mounted - sideways, i.e. with the pipes pointing toward the shower, or with the pipes pointing forward?

And did you need to extend or replace the hoses to the engine, or did the original hoses fit?

Yes it went in but on a slight angle with all the fixtures? facing the head. This made the connections all accessible from either the stairs or the head access panel.? I put a piano hinge on the bottom step so it could be easily opened for access. Just like the winch storage stair.? It also gave me a place to store the empty wine bottles and beer cans.? The hoses were long enough to be connected.? Having the stair access makes it very easy disconnect the water system to install a bypass for winterizing and draining.? Mike

Thanks for that information, Mike.
Would you happen to have a photo that shows the installation?
Thanks again.

I would make sure the new heater has a drain on it. Not having one has been an annoyance.

Good tip on the?drain, Jim.

Do you have the original Raritan heater? Arcadia's has a 3/4" tee on the cold water inlet with one end attached to the heater and a plug in the other end. I think this is supposed to be the drain,?but I have not been able?to remove it due?to the?tight space and dried?up pipe dope. The side srm on the tee goes to a bushing and a 1/2" check valve. I loosen the hose clamp on the other side of the valve and unscrew it for winterizing.and draining. When the check valve is loose, it is easier to remove the cold water hose from the barb on the other end and connect it to the hot water hose.

I then blow out the system with compressed air and put about a quart of pink antifreeze into the hot water connection using a short hose and funnel,?as described in the Raritan manual..

Hi Jim,
Yes the original Raritan 12 gallon unit. When winterizing, I pull both cold and hot hoses off and join them together. Then I have to disassemble the bottom piping because that check valve down there will not let the tank drain. It is a royal pain! I keep saying I am going to improve it, but then I just put it back together the way it was. I don't love draining all that water in that compartment, but so far so good. I don't put antifreeze in the tank at all. No need to when it's about empty. A drain, with a hose barb and hose leading to the bilge would be REAL nice, but you know how much fun it is to work in that little space. A couple of years ago I took the shower door off to winterize it, and it now lives in my garage loft. It's just not needed, but with it you can SAY you have a dry head. I would be fine with a 6 gallon tank. That size got us by for years, and lighter for racing.

Thanks Jim, we have decided to change to the Isotemp 20 l (5.3 gal)?? heater for the replacement. It is about half the price of the Raritan and includes a drain and tempering valve. It has a stainless tank so rust should not be an issue. I will let you all know how the install goes.

5.3 is enough for two people that are cruising. It's always good to be conservative with fresh water use on a boat. I got by nicely with heaters of that capacity for years. My 12 gallon tank is an extravagance that I would not replace if needed. 5-6 gallon is fine.
