Refrigerator insulation
Hi Carter, thanks for the info. I'm doing something similar. It'll be interesting to see, what if any, improvement there is. Regards Michael Sterling Ph. 252-646-9610 On Tue, Apr 15, 2025, 12:32?PM Carter Brey via <carter.brey=[email protected]> wrote:

Mike,

I can't really say how thick the existing insulation was because I took an extremely conservative route. I did not remove any of the existing fiberglass fridge box beyond drilling 1/4" holes in a regular pattern to allow foam injection, adding foam to whatever was already in there (Jimmy Hoffa? Aztec gold? Who knows?)
?
All I can say is that the available space seemed to vary depending on location. I was able to inject quite a bit through the teak settee back into the forward-facing side. Working from inside into the bottom and from outside into the aft side (after removing the oven) and into the starboard side, I found it possible only to inject a small amount before it squirted back out.
?
After sealing and sanding the holes inside the box, I used Rust-Oleum white enamel to paint the inside for cosmetics.

For what?it's worth, we installed a Frigoboat Keel Cooler refrigeration unit?in 2023. No alteration to the insulation of the 41-year old ice box. We set yjr temp to 40? and?it maintains a steady temperature all the time. Freezer compartment can keep ice cream! -- Gerald (Jerry) Brecher SIRACH 1982 Sabre 38 MkI,? I'm following up on this project from Jan of 2024, as I'm starting to upgrade my 35 year old refrigeration!
I've read the previous comments from Jay & Carter as well as the original from Matt. Do either of you have any insight into how thick the existing original insulation is ?
I've drilled some test holes & seem to find as much as 3 inches between the refrig shell and the hull, without much room for additional insulation. My boat is a 1988 38' MK II, so manufacturing processes will likely have changed over the course of time.
Carter, if you're still lurking around what did you find ? & how much of the insulation were you able to inject ?
Thanks and Regards?
Mike

Carter,? thanks for sharing, I've wanted? to do something similar for a while and was considering some type of mix & pour foam I've read about. Your and Matt's solution looks much more effective. I'm going to add this to my project list. Thanks? Mike s/v Ladylike? 88 38' MK II PS you do some good work ! On Sat., Jan. 27, 2024, 9:32 a.m. Carter Brey, <carter.brey@...> wrote: Hi Jay, |
Hi Jay,
I did this project last year and the results were pretty good-- not as good as I would expect after a complete rebuild with blue board, but definitely improved without destruction of the existing installation. I used this post as a guide: And here are photos from my project. You'll notice that I had to dismount the stove to gain access to one side of the fridge box. Where no access was possible (the outboard and bottom sides) I drilled directly into the fridge. After removing the foam muffins I sealed the holes (all 1/4") with putty and sanded smooth, then painted. It actually looks better now than before the painting? On my 362 there¡¯s a space between the hull and the refrigerator that would benefit from better insulation.
I was thinking of making a hole (or two) in the bottom of the food storage bin, located above this space, and squirting insulation foam inside this space. I was wondering if anyone has done this, what their results were, what type of foam they used, and how much?
