fairing on wing keel

Hi - the wing keel on my 1995 Sabre 362 has a lot of flaking paint on it and what may be older fairing material - or just old layers of paint.

does anyone know if the wings were originally faired when first constructed ??
?
Nice the days in the NE are getting warmer..

Most cast lead keels are faired because the castings are rough. When I repaired a section of my keel, I wasn’t the first one there. The repair was necessary because some of the casting sand had become embedded in the lead. It got wet and eventually bulged out a thin section of the lead. I cleaned it out and then faired it.?

How do you get anything to stick to lead? I did some fairing and it peeled off the same year.

When I hauled in 2015 in Mexico, the bottom paint and epoxy wre flaking in a few places so we decided to do the “patch” process instead of a full strip and re-epoxying. ?What we found were voids in the casting. ?One was large and deep. They were easily filled and faired and then epoxied and painted.

You must epoxy first.

Straight epoxy, with no filler?

Roger strip keel to bare lead. Clean metal with a wire brush on a drill or grinder. ?Get any oxidation off. Immediately roll on epoxy resin with no filler. Wire brush the keel and resin. Let it cure then fair with an epoxy based fairing compound. Give it a lightening before fairing. I did our ?S42 14 years ago and have had no failures.?

Cheers!

“Light sanding”. I think lightening is a bit drastic.?

No, no, he’s correct. It is necessary to have a high voltage and current applied to the keel and fresh epoxy that helps fuse the epoxy to the lead.

Is it April yet? ?

My 1985 32 had the same issues.? We painted a barrier coat and faired the spots, painted her and splashed the boat.? I will dive the boat this summer to see how its holding up.
