Inverter/Charger #Sabre402

Hi Folks:
?
The original Heart Interface Freedom 10 charger/invert, (1KVA) on my S402 has stopped functioning. It is located in a locker under the settee just forward of the Nav station. I was wondering what choices people have made for charger/inverts on the S402. The space in the existing locker about 16" L x11.5"w x 8" deep. is too short for any for the Victron offerings except their 3KVA Multiplus unit which looks to like it might fit but very close on the depth dimension. ?
Victron also is offering a new 1.2kVA unit that would fit nicely but its transfer switch capacity is only 16 A. ?
?
Last year I had upgraded the battery system to 4 -100 Ah LiFeP batteries with a Zeus regulator and a 170 amp alternator. This is all working great for how we use the boat. I was surprised how little power we actually use on a daily basis while cruising. ?Habits of cruising on boats with low capacity electrical systems don't just go away..
?
I would be delighted to hear what others have done.
?
A few pictures of the old unit and the battery install under the Nav seat are included.
?
Best,
Andy

Can¡¯t speak to a 402 but had a similar decision to make on our 362. ?Wanted the 3k Victron MP, instead did the 2k MP due to space restrictions. ?Several years in, very happy with it?

Andy,

Arcadia still has that same Heart inverter/charger, so we may also be ready for something newer soon.

I'm curious: What 120 V loads do?you have that would add up to more than 16A? Hair dryer and microwave at the same time?

Usually heavy loads like the water heater or an A/C would be wired so they only work on shore power and not go through the transfer switch.

Check the specs closely. The 16a may be a 240v 16a as Euro power comes in 16 and 32 amp versions of 240v single phase.

Snowy Owl has two shore power inlets, both are rated for 30 amps. The ?heaviest loads ?that run through shore 1 are ?the water heater and 110V refrigeration; shore 2 is dedicated to the A/C and is not connected to the inverter. ?
Shore 1 also supports all of the outlets on the boat. ?I certainly do not plan on using the water heater with the inverter. It would be great if the 110V refrigeration could be run from the inverter. I will need to check th nameplate on this system to get its max current ?draw. ?
My thought on sizing the transfer switch was to match or exceed the capacity of the input, 30 A. ?

Hi Andy,
?
I recently had a warranty issue with my Victron 12/2000/80/50 Multiplus Compact on my S38 Mk2. Victron shipped me a brand new replacement , but having just upgraded to 600Ah of Victron Lithium, I
decided I wanted to go back with the Multiplus II 3000. Consequently I have a brand new in the unopened
box Multiplus 2000 Compact. Available at a good price.
However, at 20.5¡± x 10¡± x 5¡± the length dimension on this unit maybe too much for you to accommodate.
Because it was a replacement (although new) that unit has 3 years left on the warranty, rather than the usual 5 years.
On board Chardonnay, I opened up the dividing bulkhead between sections of the settee berth locker just fwd ?of the Nav Station and there was room enough for it to fit before running into the Sea Frost refrigeration unit, but of course on the 402 I don¡¯t know what complications there might be, including that air filter looking thing on the LHS of the picture and whether it is anything that you can move.
Perhaps your boat lives on a swinging mooring, rather than alongside, not requiring shore power to charge your batteries, unless alongside at a Marina. However, from the Lithium battery¡¯s point of view, a new Inverter/Charger will be good for them, because those old Freedom 10¡¯s did not have a Lithium battery charging profile and you wouldn¡¯t have to use DC to DC chargers to correctly charge the batteries when on shore power.

Sounds as if you have a Sea Frost 120V A/C unit as do I. I can run mine on pass through AC from the inverter and can disconnect from shore power leaving the 400 Watts of Solar, to charge the batteries and they will remain fully charged with the the refrigeration and bilge pump running. I have not tried this in full on summer heat, more on that after this summer. ?Right now, it is only slightly on the plus side, because there is also some overhead involved because the Inverter uses some power to do the conversion from DC to AC.

Peter:
?
Snowy Owl has both a 120V Seafrost unit and an engine driven unit. ?I would like to size the new inverter to occasionally run the 110V refrigeration unit obviating the need to run the engine in quiet anchorage during a multi day stop. I have yet to add solar to the boat, another thing on the to do list.
?
Regarding fitting a new inverter in the space where the existing Heart Freedom 10 is; there doesn't seem to be many option that will fit. I can't remove the interconnecting bulkhead to extend it forward as you have done on your boat since on the $02 there is a water tank just forward. ?The only options seem to be to find one that fits or move it elsewhere, into the cockpit locker or maybe under the stairs. ??
