Insurance Survey Req - Annapolis

I just received notice from Geico BoatUS that because of the age of my boat, I must obtain a survey in order to renew my policy.
?
Can anyone recommend a good surveyor for this purpose in my area? ?Boat is on the hard. ?Any other input/insights are appreciated.

Bob,

I just went through this with GEICO. After they receive the survey you¡¯ll get a letter stating they will continue insuring the boat once all the recommendations from the Survey are completed. My surveyor¡¯s recommendation was ¡°none currently.¡± I¡¯ve been trying to figure out how to fix ¡°none currently.¡± ?

I went through this with Geico last year. The findings from the survey were minor, and easily remedied, so I was happy enough with that. All good to know.

However Geico added that they wanted a full survey of the standing rigging, to include removal and dye-penetrant testing of all the chainplates. Despite no survey issues. All this was going to get me into major work (some destructive of my interior) and $$$.

I switched to Progressive, and saved money on my premium.

You might try Progressive. When GEICO cancelled my policy I was able to sign up with Progressive online without a survey for my 1986 S32

Hi all:
Purchased a Sabre34 last Spring-she's an old girl--1982. Both Geico and Progressive would not insure over 40 years old.

I found United Marine Underwriters and they were wonderful. Cost very competitive to what the other two would have charged if they, in fact, would insure my boat.

I had an unfortunate lightning strike, knocking out all electronics, and they responded quickly and effectively. They did not quibble over any of the bills that were presented. The check came faster than I would have thought with no equivocation. The policy was only three months old at the time of incident. I would highly recommend it.

Yes, the only limitation is your will be restricted to 80% of the purchase price as agreed value with Progressive.

I've been with Progressive for about 10 years, my 34 is 46 years old.
Premiums are very reasonable, never had to provide a survey.
Been boating for 60+ years with no claims.
For me the insurance is about liability coverage, the hull coverage
is a bonus.

Comparing insurance premiums without providing information about the amount of coverage and the kind of coverage is pretty meaningless. Liability only coverage is much less expensive than Agreed Hull Value. We¡¯d need to know the deductible, oil spill coverage, liability levels, etc to render an informed opinion about the insurance premium.

Hi all,
I got a letter from Geico that I need an acceptable condition and evaluation survey this year to renew my boat insurance. Based on the suggestion in this forum?I contacted? United Marine Underwriters?
To get the quote I had to enter how long I owned it and a value of the boat at purchase, but in 2018, it was?a hand me down boat from my family so I entered $0. I requested $300,000 liability and $10,000 medical to each individual.
They replied, NO, due to the age and their response was as follows:

Re: 1978?34'?SABRE CORPORATION ?

?

Thank you for the opportunity to provide an insurance quotation.? Due to the age of the vessel, we do not have a market and will be unable to provide you with a quotation.? Sorry we could not be of assistance.

Guess I'm going to be looking for a surveyor too, since that is what Geico requires.

Had the same survey requirement from Geico. I did the United Marine Insurance on line application as someone suggested. I listed the value as $25000. (my 2019 survey said $27500). Asked for $500,000 liability. They did not provide an immediate quote saying it would have to be reviewed. They responded the next day quoting $1750 about 2.5 time more than I am paying with Geico.
Checking out Progressive next.

Hi all,?
After getting a letter from Geico, requiring an acceptable condition and valuation survey prior to my next renewal, I decided to call Geico.? I did, they said it¡¯s not necessary to haul boat out for that survey. Also said the report is not due until 3/17/26, next year!?

So I'll start the process now, get a surveyor near Galesville Md. I have a list of 4 surveyors that were recommended to me by friends.

I had a similar experience with Geico. Hauling is not required and I have until my annual renewal in December to get the survey done. This is the first time in 8 years since I started with Geico that they've required a survey so I'm not too bothered by it.

I was early on this thread. Coming back with a word of caution.?

! too got 12 months notice from Geico (to submit the survey by my renewal date in July 2025). Remember it's not just the survey. Geico have to sign off on it, and will want any "significant" items (in their judgment, not necessarily as categorized by the surveyor) rectified?with documentation of repair submitted and approved by Geico, before they will renew the policy. I got the survey done when I hauled the boat last September. Good job too. There was nothing major, but there were a few minor items that I set up to get taken care of over the winter, rather than get down to the wire with having to get these done close to the renewal date.

What threw me - and I may have been unlucky with a particular adjuster - was that Geico added a requirement for removal and dye-penetrant testing of all the chainplates. This without any indication of stress-corrosion cracking. Our chainplates are pretty substantial. That was getting to be a major undertaking. Hence my shift to Progressive.

So bottom line - get your survey done early and submitted to Geico, so you know what you're dealing with.

Re chain plates
We rebedded our chain plates last year before crossing to Hawaii. There were no symptoms except age and we thought it prudent considering the 6 month cruising on open ocean we had planned . It took one day not counting drying time of the life caulk. We waited one day to reattach shrouds and checked bolt torque of the reattached shrouds. ?This gave great peace of mind in the ocean. We were confirmed again of the great design and built of this boat- no dry rot but the old sealant needed renewing. As our boats get older they need proactive love or the age will show up when least desired. ?

Bob,
?
I've been in contact with Will Stahlgren who will be doing a CV survey on my boat this March.? I'm changing insurance so that I can take my boat to the Bahamas this fall; all the insurance companies I've been in contact with who provide coverage in that part of the world required a new survey.? He's been professional and responsive to me thus far.?

My boat is on the hard at Herrington Harbour North, so I am sure he cover Deale, MD.
