Yeah, but I'm getting old and war becomes less and less appealing!

You weren¡¯t stirring the pot. ?This is merely ¡°lively conversation¡±. I always try to look at both sides to evaluate what works for me so y¡¯ll just got a peek into my brain!

Alison,

I didn't say it, but marelon or similar seacocks are wonderful products and to each their own. ?Agree that paying the yard to do the yearly maintenance on the Spartans quickly adds up. ?The effort fo change all of them out is not insignificant though, both in time and money. ?But then it's a done deal and zero maintenance.

I do my own seacock maintenance, so that money stays with me and I find the work to be rewarding and not that time consuming. ?Last winter, with some help from Don Fleming, we had all seven apart, greased (no lapping on the cones needed) and re-assembled in less than two hours. ?And being a self-confessed Luddite of sorts, throwing away a perfectly good boat part because it has a maintenance schedule is not in my DNA.

Please accept my apology for stirring the pot! ?I know better.

David,
A case can be made for either one you talk about never replacing your true holes again, but what is your labor worth every time you service them if you don¡¯t value your labor then you¡¯re ahead with your Spartans. If you don¡¯t want to do the labor and you¡¯re paying somebody $125 an hour Well that starts to add up rather quickly and you might consider the Maralon instead. Either way, both are very good products with very different approaches.

Jon, I can't stop myself from a snarky comment. ?Those of us who still have Spartans, will never need any spares! ?I fully understand the allure of no maintenance, though I would rather spend my boat money elsewhere.

I just replaced seven of my through-hulls and seacocks with the Tru Design units and could not be happier. The action is massively superior, and the rated strength (500 #'s lateral load?) is very reassuring.

Ps. I've the original Spartan units available cheap.
