Re: solar panel set up for sabre 32 on mooring

Our Sabre is on a mooring 9 months out of the year. I'm a K.I.S.S. kind of person. We don't keep anything on when we're gone except the high level bilge pump. I read somewhere that if you have a really small solar panel compared to your battery bank, you can skip the controller and with it a ton of cost and complication. That is where we started three seasons ago and have never had a need to go further. We did a temporary install of this 10 watt rigid panel on the cockpit coaming held in place by a couple bungee cords. When we first come aboard, we use the quick disconnect to unplug it and toss it in the cockpit locker. We have (1) 4D battery and (1) dedicated start battery on an echo charger, both traditional wet cell lead acid batteries. The boat gets used once every week or two and the batteries are always topped off. We only run the engine about 20 minutes out and 20 minutes back when we go out, so we really needed a secondary charging system. The only thing we are thinking of changing is installing an ACR to replace the old echo charger. It was a $120 experiment for us that ended up being all we needed.
