I'll dip my toe into the pool and say that I re-bedded our 38MKI fixed port glass to the frame and used clear silicone. ?It was my understanding from Glenn that the original sealant was silicone. ?I am not a big fan of silicone onboard, tho I do have a small tube that gets used from time to time. ?In this case, it worked well for me. ?Prior to applying, I used blue tape and taped the glass about 1/8" away from the frame all of the way around, then after application and bedding, I used one of those rubber calk smoothing tools that all home improvement stores sell to reduce the amount of exposed sealant and smoothing it in the process. ?The trick with the blue tape is to not let the silicone cure completely before removing it. ?You want it set but not completely.
I'm not sure that I would use black sealant. ?I think it will stand out too much. ?If you are leaving the frames in a mill finish, or painting them white, clear or gray seems more appropriate.

Thanks for all the very helpful replies so far. ?I¡¯ll return from a family visit in South Carolina tonight, and will be back aboard tomorrow.
Phil & Andy, Depending on the thickness of my glass I may take you up on your generous offers and owe you guys a few beers. ?In your case Phil, I may consider investing in a micro-brewery.
?
Elizabeth & Andy, Do you mind indicating the cost of the frame powder coating? ?And, Elizabeth how long ago did you do the job, and how is it holding up?
?
Dave, ?Thanks for your insights as well. ?Your willing to share your considerable knowledge and experience is always appreciated
It¡¯s my understanding that black is more UV resistant than white in everything from caulk to electrical zip ties. ?Besides the aesthetic look, that¡¯s the main reason why I¡¯m planning to edge the frame to glass in black. ?Please correct me if I am mistaken.
?
Also, does anyone have an opinion as to the width/thickness of the glass to frame caulk. ?As previously stated the existing caulk is around 3/8-1/2¡± sloping to the glass from the frame. ?It¡¯s gray, frayed, and unsightly. ?I¡¯d
like to do 1/16-1/8¡± bead, but I¡¯m not sure if it would compromise the seal. ?Not a big deal: I can always rip it out and redo it. ?Still, any thoughts would be appreciated, as always.
