Musings of a Mad (aka Insane) Allstar Node Owner

开云体育

I have had an Allstar Node (43286) connected to my local repeater for some time now, and it developed a problem (which was caused by its owner) a few weeks back.? I decided I needed a personal node here at my QTH to help me troubleshoot this and any other problems. ?I’ve had one.? Took it apart and used the pieces for something else.? And, I didn’t want to pull everything back together.

?

So, I ordered a SHARI PiHat.? I chose the option of having the radio pre-soldered to the board out of pure laziness.? No reason I couldn’t have done that myself, and I kind of wish I had.? I received the kit yesterday and spent a couple of hours reviewing the documentation and putting it together.?? Other than the fact that I couldn’t drill a hole in the right spot to save my life, it was one of the easiest builds I’ve ever done. The 3d printed template for drilling the holes was so cool (even though I seem to be dimensionally challenged when it comes to drilling holes).? I love the case.? Best one I’ve seen for a Pi (I’ve seen many). It does seem to function as a rather good heat sink. The LED light block is a great idea. The build quality of the board seems superb.

?

The instructions were ALMOST spot on.? They were clear. They were complete. They were easy to follow.? The only criticism I could give on them is that the version I used (from the files folder on Groups.IO) included configuring the boot up options for the serial port and downloading the app to control the radio.? I found that in the version of the image I downloaded (using the link in the documentation) those steps were already complete.? No problem at all.? Just something that could be reviewed in a future release.? Maybe I didn’t use the latest version of the document.

?

It’s rare in the ham radio community to find a project like this that is so well built AND that has such great documentation. ?Kudos to the developer of this thing and all who have contributed!

Dan,?W4DTO:

This was a great post to read. Thanks for posting it.

While not a PiHat, I love my SHARIs.

Agree with Curt. I love my Shari. I just saw my first PiHat on the weekend at a hamfest. It was mounted in a truck for mobile operation. That is a sweet case that appears to dissipate a lot of heat. Even so, the ham that owns it and I both thought it was running a little on the warm side. I learned he had installed a Pi4 so I told him that was much of the heat issue. I then suggested he replace it with a Pi3 as he didn't need the horsepower of a Pi4 to drive a PiHat. He told me the next day that he glued a small fan to the top of the case and it helped to bring down the temperature significantly. He didn't want to drill a hole in the case. I think with time he is going to realize it would be worth drilling a series of? holes on both sides of the case unless of course he drops a Pi3 into it.

I have a Pi3 without a PiHat and in a small plastic case running Allstar at our air conditioned repeater site and the new Pi4 running the SHARI PiHat at my home QTH. They are linked together, so the activity of each is similar.? I would expect the one with the Hat to be warmer.?

Supermon says the CPU temp of the Pi3 is 111F. The Pi4 is 114F.? I bet that case is doing wonders.?

I may stick a fan on it one day too see what it does, but i think it's doing fine.?

I do agree about the Pi4 being overkill,? though.? I wish i had ordered mine for a Pi3.
