Re: Audio Cosmetics

James Bongiorno

Once again folks, the displays are NOT nixies or any other thing. They are
VERY expensive self contained LARGE LED readouts that can be seen clear
across the room. When I get the time I will reshoot the photos. Besides,
why all the bantering by most of you guys when (as stated by Alex) none of
you would ever consider buying the unit in the first place. Please don't
bitch about something that you have no intention of ever owning.

who knows - updated retro is in - the new mustang is selling like hot
cakes and the camaro and challenger will probably be back sooner than
later - the nixies are still pretty cool looking after all these years

Bob,
My comments reflect several past posts in which people had trouble
finding the displays (In which segments have burned out or went dim)
to fix their ailing tuners. I seem to recall that the 8000 suffered
this fate frequently. Of course, they did last quite a long time to
begin with.

I don't own a SAE 8000, and never have. I'm sure anyone would agree
that putting Nixie tubes in a "modern" product would not be the right
thing to do. (Not even sure if they are still commercially available).

The numerical readout on the Ambrosia does not seem to be (Please
correct me if I'm wrong) a LCD display, but rather, something
reminiscent of the SAE tuners (8000). If true, why go this route,
considering the longevity problems and parts unavailability?

Longivity problems? What longeivity problems? Want to flesh out
this statement a bit?

What parts are you having trouble sourcing? I have two 8000 tuners
one of which I replaced all the 7-segment display in with commonly
available ones. All the parts in the Mark VIII/8000 are readily

available

(with the possible exception of the front end assembly).

I can assure everyone that the displays are indeed LEDs. As I said

Hello all,
Haven't posted in a while, but have been lurking...

I think that, since we are, obviously, endeared to SAE/GAS/SUMO, we
pay more attention to these products, perhaps, than a lot of others.
(Of course we are certainly aware of the other gear out there).

The numerical readout on the Ambrosia does not seem to be (Please
correct me if I'm wrong) a LCD display, but rather, something
reminiscent of the SAE tuners (8000). If true, why go this route,
considering the longevity problems and parts unavailability?

I think the best looking piece of audio gear I've ever seen is the
Day Sequerra tuner. I like the layout of the controls, and you just
can't beat the bright white backlit, rectangular control buttons. I
am very partial to backlit controls; a la McIntosh.

If I were to design (cosmetically speaking) a component, it would
have these attributes.

Anyone with me?

Regards,

Tony.

ATI happening's

First you may have noticed my email has changed to sae@... This is part
of my new web site. Although not live yet, it won't be much longer.

I spoke with Mike Pontelle the other day and he told me they have reaquired the
SAE name. He said they don't have plans for it yet, but I would say something
is happening, otherwise why copywrite the name again.

He and Morris are aware of the SAE speakers being marketed on Ebay, at Cosco and
www.speakerz.com. They are being done by the original SAE speaker manufacturer
using a design of their own. ATI doesn't have a problem with it, as long as it's
only speakers.

I know some of you have purchased these. Let us know what you think of them. If
nothing else, the're cool because they say SAE. ;-)

It is available in Black on special order at extra cost. However, I'm
confused. You've expressed distaste for the look. Why would you consider
buying one if you don't like the looks?

Re: SAE Parts:

sstinc:"First sstinc:Last"

Dear Bob,
Mounting the TO-220 devices in place of the TO-66 should not be a problem. Just cut off the center collector lead and you're in business. As far as the drivers go, this is a very serious problem due to the fact that the design did NOT use a series connected output
stage. Therefore, ALL of the output devices as well as drivers MUST be very high voltage (BVceo=250Volts min.). Of course, RCA is no longer in the semiconductor business. This division became part of GE semiconductor when it was bought by GE which later was bought
by Harris. All of those parts simply disappeared. And sadly, there are no replacements that I know of. I will search to see if I can find a complementary pair of devices that will work. I don't hold out much hope however, of finding them in TO-220 packages. There
might be some devices from the Japanese such as Toshiba however, I'm not sure. Also, it is absolutely vital that the drivers be LOW SPEED ie: lower fT devices in the order of 3 to 10MHz. If you use higher bandwidth drivers there will be a strong possibility of
oscillations and instability. In addition, these devices MUST have at least an 8 amp collector current rating as well as at least a 50 or higher watt rating. Again, this is a real problem which is why today most designers are moving to full bridge output stages
which cuts the voltage rating in half.

I would like to thank you for responding so promptly to my
questions about SAE Transistors. I have checked Mouser and they do have
the Toshiba 2SA1837 (PNP) and the 23SC4793 (NPN) which I noticed come
packaged in a TO 220 case. The SAE 11-0066B and 11-0072B transistor
manufactured by RCA came packaged in a TO 66 case. Is this correct?
These transistors are the Driver and Pre-Driver transistors for the

case styles should be problem.

EQ-2. Lots of good papers on their website as well as product
literature, also good phone support just in case you need it.

My SAE Brochures List

Mark Gurries

Here is my current collection of growing SAE literature. They are
presented in my best guess of chronological order newest to oldest going
down the list. Corrections are welcomed. Do any of you know of
information that I am missing? I like to build a complete list.

The information also shows that the Integrated Amps, 180EQ, and the 3200
Tuner where short lived products.

Unless otherwise stated, all are original SAE brochures:

X Series. X-10A, X-15A, X-25A, X-1P. 6 pg color. Gray cover.

Sorry for the forum departure, but my new site is almost there. While
InterNIC
transfers my domain to my new server, I was wondering what display size
you run
in? My concern is really how many of you use less than 800x600.

Just email me direct: wardsweb@...

Thanks
Luther
800 x 600 is fine.
