Re: Audio Cosmetics
James Bongiorno
Once again folks, the displays are NOT nixies or any other thing. They are
VERY expensive self contained LARGE LED readouts that can be seen clear across the room. When I get the time I will reshoot the photos. Besides, why all the bantering by most of you guys when (as stated by Alex) none of you would ever consider buying the unit in the first place. Please don't bitch about something that you have no intention of ever owning. James [Original Message]found at: at:

I can assure everyone that the displays are indeed LEDs. As I said
previously, the lighting was not right when we took these first photos in a hurry. James [Original Message]at:

ATI happening's
First you may have noticed my email has changed to sae@... This is part
of my new web site. Although not live yet, it won't be much longer. I spoke with Mike Pontelle the other day and he told me they have reaquired the SAE name. He said they don't have plans for it yet, but I would say something is happening, otherwise why copywrite the name again. He and Morris are aware of the SAE speakers being marketed on Ebay, at Cosco and www.speakerz.com. They are being done by the original SAE speaker manufacturer using a design of their own. ATI doesn't have a problem with it, as long as it's only speakers. I know some of you have purchased these. Let us know what you think of them. If nothing else, the're cool because they say SAE. ;-) |
Re: First Ambrosia Pictures Available

It is available in Black on special order at extra cost. However, I'm
confused. You've expressed distaste for the look. Why would you consider buying one if you don't like the looks? James [Original Message]at:

Mounting the TO-220 devices in place of the TO-66 should not be a problem. Just cut off the center collector lead and you're in business. As far as the drivers go, this is a very serious problem due to the fact that the design did NOT use a series connected output stage. Therefore, ALL of the output devices as well as drivers MUST be very high voltage (BVceo=250Volts min.). Of course, RCA is no longer in the semiconductor business. This division became part of GE semiconductor when it was bought by GE which later was bought by Harris. All of those parts simply disappeared. And sadly, there are no replacements that I know of. I will search to see if I can find a complementary pair of devices that will work. I don't hold out much hope however, of finding them in TO-220 packages. There might be some devices from the Japanese such as Toshiba however, I'm not sure. Also, it is absolutely vital that the drivers be LOW SPEED ie: lower fT devices in the order of 3 to 10MHz. If you use higher bandwidth drivers there will be a strong possibility of oscillations and instability. In addition, these devices MUST have at least an 8 amp collector current rating as well as at least a 50 or higher watt rating. Again, this is a real problem which is why today most designers are moving to full bridge output stages which cuts the voltage rating in half. To: James Bongiorno; I would like to thank you for responding so promptly to my questions about SAE Transistors. I have checked Mouser and they do have the Toshiba 2SA1837 (PNP) and the 23SC4793 (NPN) which I noticed come packaged in a TO 220 case. The SAE 11-0066B and 11-0072B transistor manufactured by RCA came packaged in a TO 66 case. Is this correct? These transistors are the Driver and Pre-Driver transistors for the Model 2500 and 2600 amplifier. I wouldn't think mounting the different case styles should be problem. Thanks again, Best Regards, Bob. Ludka |

The diode is an original Fairchild FDH400, that is, a planar diode with 400Volts PIV and 100ma. of current. The SAE107 and the SAE208 are no longer being made (not for about 15 years). They were original Motorola parts. The nearest equivilent today would be the Toshiba 2SA1837(PNP) and the 2SC4793(NPN) and they are available from Solid State Sales in N.J. and Mouser. The other two devices I'm not familiar with at least from those numbers because SAE changed their numbering system after I left. You could call ATI and ask them what the original JEDEC numbers were. Can anyone tell me the Generic part number or its description for the following SAE parts: Diode 11-0091,UG2101; Transistor 11-0066B, SAE 107; Transistor 11-0072B, SAE 208. I am also looking for a 100K Balance Control For an SAE 4000 electronic crossover.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bob Ludka |

Ok, for all of you who are in dire need of schematics:
mailto:mgasman@... $25 for service manuals and $20 for owners manuals These are xerox copies. I think he's way high for what your getting, but if you really need one, there aren't many choices for now. I hope we can change that by pooling all our manuals and making them available in PDF format online. Maybe we can work together to combine our resources. If you buy one, let's get it scanned and onverted to PDF. That way one person doesn't have to take such a hit, if you want more than one or two manuals. Let me know what you think. I'm open to any suggestion on spreading the wealth of information we all have. Luther |

Well you just happened to hit on the other audio gear I use. Yes, the Carvers are a standard 19" rack width, but "NO" you can not bolt them in. The rack handles mount in holes that don't line up with standard rack rails. All my Carver amps sit on shelves, so they look like the're mounted.

I found a great parametric EQ, New
at www.rane.com They have a full line of fantastic audio equipment that will meet or surpass your expectations. I don't recommend their amplifiers, but their eq's, mixers, and preamps will floor you! I have worked with this stuff for years. I'm considering purchasing one of their THX certified equalizers. Take a peek at their site. They have a full selection of downloadable PDF files and schematics. -=Jeff Gross=- |
