The manufacturers saw a good idea and jumped to be first and lock in their product line as the best. We have several voice protocols now: AM, FM, and SSB. The better radios support all as they are in the public domain now. Will the best digital mode emerge like VHS beat Betamax or will we have a bunch for a while going forward? I have noticed that Kenwood put D-Star on a HT. Is that the start of a trend? The marketplace is going to decide who has the best feature set for the right price point.
