Locked Looking for a Celestron Evolution Mount
Hello, My Celestron Evolution mount is having intermittent issues, and I fear the motor control board may be one the way out. I talked to Celestron support and it looks like repair will be in the lower $300. I thought I would see if there is anyone in the area who has this model mount who might be interested in selling it to me. Please respond within the next day, I see one on Astromart that is reasonably priced, but want to check locally first. Thanks! James Yoder

Locked Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshaw-ATLAS) This Saturday Evening 2
Just a heads-up that Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshaw-ATLAS) is going to be best positioned for viewing, and brightest on This Saturday 10/12 shortly after sunset. Predictions are that is should be pretty bright and may have a good sized tail. By Saturday it should have just come around from the back side of the sun and quite close to the sun. The best chance of seeing it is should be about 30 to 60 minutes after sunset. I should appear just above the horizon about where the sun set. The screenshot below is of the horizon at 6:30pm AZ time. As you can see it will be to the right of Venus, and the left of the bright star Arcturus. Comets are generally best viewed either with the naked eye, or with a wide field pair of binoculars. These objects are also great targets if you have a decent camera placed on a tripod. Comets are notorious for being difficult to predict how bright and what size tail they will have. Also, there is a chance the comet may not survive the close encounter with the sun. That all being said, predictions are that this should be quite bright, and have a good size tail. Here is a fairly recent photo taken of the comet. More details on the comet can be found on my ArtCentrics Blog page here. Happy Hunting! James Yoder

Locked Moon Madness Tomorrow (09/17)
There are 4 astronomical events involving the moon tomorrow. I have never seen so many things involving the moon in a 24 hour period in my life before, so you might want to check some of these out. Some of these are best observed naked eye, or binoculars, while others will be best in a telescope. Exact times are based on my house located in Chandler, Arizona so you will want to verify the exact time at your location utilizing planetarium software. There is a free online one here. Make sure to enter your location. SuperMoon ¨C A super moon is when the moon if full and close to earth in it¡¯s not quite circular orbit around the earth and can be up to 8% larger from the size of a regular moon. This full moon is known as the Harvest Moon. Oh, it¡¯s a seasonal blue moon also. All Night event. Naked Eye Event ¨C Best viewed with the naked eye or binoculars. Saturn Occulted ¨C For the Phoenix area, the moon will actually go in front of the planet Saturn(Known as Occultation) at about 4:15am. It will be pretty low in the western sky. Saturn will re-emerge from the moon at 5:05 am and the moon will be only 5 degrees above the horizon at that point. 4:15 AM Saturn goes behind moon. Moon at about 14 degrees above the horizon 5:05 AM Saturn re-emerges from behind the moon. Moon at about 5 degrees above the horizon Best Viewing - Telescope, but binoculars may work also Partial Lunar Eclipse ¨C The shadow of the earth will pass in front of the moon (know as a Lunar Eclipse). This Partial Lunar Eclipse will only cover about 10 percent of the moon at maximum. 7:16 PM Partial Eclipse Start | Alt 8 degrees above Eastern horizon 7:44 PM Partial Eclipse Maximum | Alt 14 degrees above Eastern horizon 08:15 PM Partial Eclipse End | Alt 20 degrees above Eastern horizon Best Viewing ¨C Naked Eye, Binoculars Neptune Occulted ¨C For the Phoenix area, the moon will actually go in front of the planet Neptune (Known as Occultation) at about 11:52 PM. It will be petty high in the sky. 11:52 PM Neptune goes behind moon. Moon at about 53 degrees above the horizon 01:04 AM Neptune emerges from behind the moon. Moon will be about 54 degrees above the horizon Best Viewing ¨C Telescope only. Neptune is just a blue dot even in a telescope. Clear Skies! James Yoder

Locked SAC meeting reminder - Friday the 13th
Hello everyone, Just a reminder that this Friday (yes, Friday the 13th!), SAC will hold it¡¯s regular monthly meeting at the ¡°Clubhouse¡± in Phoenix. Our speaker this month is Kevin Schindler from Lowell Observatory. Kevin¡¯s topic will be something I¡¯m sure most of us are familiar with: Robert Burnham, Jr. and His Celestial Handbook. Robert Burnham, Jr. compiled one of the most popular astronomy books ever¡ªthe three-volume observing bible, Burnham¡¯s Celestial Handbook¡ªwhile working at Lowell Observatory in the mid-20th century. Yet Burnham¡¯s life was enigmatic. This program will look at this complicated man who brought the wonders of space to people around the world. Also on the agenda we will begin the process of new officer nominations for the coming year. All elected officer positions are open to nomination but per the By-laws the following have served the maximum two year terms and must step aside: President Vice-President Secretary Properties Director I would ask all SAC members to give some thought to volunteering to serve in one of these positions to support your astronomy club. Hope to see you all this Friday. Michael Poppre SAC Prez.
