Modern SP locomotive headlights

I have a question about Southern Pacific modern locomotive headlights.? ?I just purchased an American Flyer Legacy Southern Pacific GE U33 C.? ?It is a very fine model and runs great.? ? The forward head light configuration is two white headlights above the windshield vertical.? ?Two white headlights in the nose horizontal.? ?On the roof above the over windshield headlights is a single red light that blinks (strobes?).? ?I also have an EMD SD 40-2 in brass with non working headlights.? This I will fix someday.? ?The white head light configuration on the SD 40-2 is similar to the U33 C.? ?The red light on the SD 40-2 is centered above the nose headlights.
? ? ?I assumed the red light was for when the loco was rear facing as an end unit DPU.? I bet someone out there knows everything about these lights.? Can you enlighten me ,? please?

A quick google I found this on Trains website.

Southern Pacific placed multiple sets on a locomotive, with the upper clear lights between the number boards used in daily service and a red Gyralite in the nose that automatically activated in situations such as when the train¡¯s air brakes was placed in emergency. Other railroads had similar setups, though many would simply use a single red or clear bulb, or in a two-headlight case, either two clear bulbs or one clear and one red, using the former in train service and the latter in emergency situations.

Most of the other search results mentioned the emergency aspect and letting oncoming train know there may be a derailment.

I used to have 4-5 SP books by Joseph Strapac that described each class of engines and the specific uniqueness for each group of engines. Each year had a focus on a specific group of engines. ?I believe I had one for 1973, 1977, 1978, and 1980. ?Should have kept them.
