Hoquat Sides

As I looked back at my Amity Starr refrigerator car kit, based on the older Northeastern/Kinsman kits but using Grandt hatch and door details (Scenery Unlimited re-issues of the line had the original whitemetal castings, whether because Don Heimburger had access to the dies or else?

just bought up a good stock of finished castings, I haven't heard, it occurred to me that although I was not enthusiastic about building the kit?

using the included Edelweiss sides, it would be easy to substitute others I preferred.

I refer to them as Walp sides because I'd seen it written that way, but that may have been a typo, as I've just seen WALL on the list.? In any?

event, has there been a list of those silk screened sides? posted to the list or otherwise available?? Bill Morris had a good stock of them at?

Boxboro and I thought vaguely of buying a pair or two but somehow never quite got back to his table when he was there.

They are correctly called Walp sides. They were produced by Gene Walp from Pensacola.

Also forgot to mention Gene had previously done sides as Old Shanty long before I hooked up with him and began distributing his sides for him. If anyone has old Hoquat catalogs from the late 80’s there is a pretty complete list of all the Walp sides in there. Gene also did sides for Red Ball HO kits

I'd like to find out who did the SOO Line express reefer sides that were contained in a S Scenery kit. As I mentioned a few days ago, they must have been dry transfers. I don't think Gene would have done those.? The lettering was so good, sharp and in gold leaf color.

A have a few of his sides left even after deciding that I could never build all of them, especially after finding out most of the advertising sides were outlawed after a ???certain time period! Besides SHS seems to have covered many of those sides in the meantime.

And speaking of advertising sides and similar.? In the middle of SHS effort to have wooden reefers populate our layouts, I made a print of the ART reefer painted for Austex Chille and sent it to Don Thompson for consideration for a run of them.? Well, they made a run of them.? Later on I was approached by a couple of MP/ART lovers who asked permission to use the photo in a book.? That was about 5 years ago and I understand it's being released now.? Tony Thompson of Signature Press is the publisher and hopefully the print is in the book.

Maybe the sides were done with Clover House transfers?
Russ Clover did some, only other person I can think of is Tony Perles.
SHS did borrow my display of Walp sides for a number of their reefer designs.

I'll give Clover House a try, assuming the new owner still have them around

The ones I have in the Hoquat MC and GN kits are silk screened.

The Red Ball kits I remember all had card sides.

Yes the Old Shanty sides were also card stock, I believe. All the sides Gene did for me are silkscreened. For cars with white lettering he could only do one #, for cars with black lettering he could do different numbers on each set of sides. Normal run was. 50 sets. He also used process that pressed the spaces between boards after the screen rather than using scribed siding so there was no unpainted gaps between boards.
